Four sign for Stoke on deadline day…

Posted in Football, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership on August 31, 2010 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Eidur Gudjohnsen signs on a season long loan from Monaco; Jermaine Pennant signs on loan until January from Real Zaragoza; Marc Wilson finally signs from Pompey and Salif Diao re-signs on a two year contract. Leaving the club are Liam Lawrence and Dave Kitson who both head to Pompey as part of the Wilson deal. Ben Marshall joins Carlisle on loan.

Three cracking signings for us and Tuncay stays at the club for now!

Marc Wilson signs but Gudjohnsen seems Fulham bound…

Posted in Football, Stoke City FC, The Premiership on August 30, 2010 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

On the eve of transfer deadline day Pompey’s Marc Wilson finally signs for us with Liam Lawrence and Dave ‘Ginger Ninja’ Kiston joining Pompey. Good business all round as we get a young midfielder with potential and Premiership experience plus offload two high wage earners. Lawrence will do very well for Pompey I am sure and the Ginger Ninja I can see will suit Pompey’s style of play. Good luck to them both and welcome Marc Wilson!

Elsewhere we seem to have missed out on Gudjohnsen whose been swayed by the bright lights of Fulham but all is not lost as Salif Diao has signed a new contract – this maybe the player/coach role he was offered earlier in the summer but turned down as he wanted to carry on playing full time. Just hope he doesn’t play too many games…

Tuncay could be Sunderland bound as Steve Bruce takes a scattergun approach to signing a new striker and gets linked with 3 or 4 possible striker targets.

Hopefully two or three more new faces by tomorrow…

Eidur Gudjohnsen to Stoke???

Posted in Football, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership on August 29, 2010 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Yes less than 48hrs until the summer transfer window shuts at 6pm on Tuesday 31st August and the rumours are flying in now. Monaco striker Eidur Gudjohnsen is a possible loan signing for us. Now that would be a real coup if it came off.

More soon!

‘Radio Head’ by John Osbourne

Posted in Books, Classic rock, Last FM, Melodic rock, Modern rock, News, Poetry, Pop rock on August 29, 2010 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

John Osbourne’s book ‘Radio Head’ is a book for all lovers of radio. What a joy it must ahve been researching for this book whereby each day you try a new radio station to listen to whilst at work doing a fairly boring data entry job (shame I can’t listen to radio at work – lucky man). The book has a chapter on each station he listened to from the formula musical pap of Capital FM and Virgin (now improved as Absolute Radio), Virgin’s old saying used to be ‘you’re never more than an hour away from a Queen song.’ But he discovers some new joys like BBC Asian Network, 6 Music and Resonance, a station that you never know what’s coming up next.

There are also interviews with some of the author’s radio heroes including Mark Radcliffe, Tommy Boyd (who I am pleased to report is still on radio via a weekly podcast) and Nicolas Parsons. A enjoyable and easy read that certainly relighted my interest in radio surfing…

This got me thinking about my childhood days in the late 70′s and 80′s trying to get radio stations via  medium wave on a transitor radio. Bearing in mind a) there were far fewer statiosn then and b) we lived in the countryside just outside Stoke-on-Trent I was amazed to to pick-up Liverpool based 194 Radio City, although the reception was poor; Wolverhampton based Beacon Radio which was very boring I seem to recall and Radio Luxembourg. It only broadcast at night but had a decent playlist most of the time.

I was overjoyed when Stoke got its IRL (Independent Local Radio) station in the shape of Signal Radio which first broadcast in 1983. It was a thrill to have something better than BBC Radio Stoke. Many of the original radio DJ’s had worked stints at Manchester’s Picadilly Radio including the controversial James Stannage, who attracted Stoke’s more loony fringe and often had to cut them offas they went into various rants. Other DJ’s included the late Mel Scholes, John Evington, Doug Wood, Digby Taylor and Absolute’s Geoff Lloyd, who started off reading the traffic and travel then hosted an evening show. It is now known as Signal One and is still goign string, albeit with your bog standard daytime airplay list.

Chelsea 2-0 Stoke City

Posted in Football, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership on August 28, 2010 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Much better scoreline than I was expecting especially as Chelsea won their last two games 6-0. International break and then two big home games, Aston Villa and West Ham. Hopefully we’ll have a few new faces in by Tuesday’s transfer deadline day. Latest is Marc Wilson set to join providing Liam Lawrence and the Ginger Ninja agree terms with Pompey.

Marc Wilson next in?

Posted in Football, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership on August 26, 2010 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Lots of activity on the football websites today mainly over Pompey’s Marc Wilson joining us with Dave Kitson and Liam Lawrence going the other way. That is not a bad deal at all for Pompey as Kitson will flourish more with a team that plays it on the ground more and Lawrence on his day is simply superb. Sadly though we have only seen the odd glimpse of this last season.

Wildest rumour? Michael Owen signing on loan but you never know with Stoke!

Tuncay looks like he may play his last game for us on Saturday at Chelsea with either Wigan or Sunderland his next club. Very sad to see him go as okay he adds some flair to our team even with his strops as he gets substituted.

Family and friends,
As many of you know already, Phil Kennemore was recently diagnosed with metastatic cancer. Phil has undergone a barrage of tests, a long hospital stay at Stanford, an operation, and will soon start aggressive chemotherapy to regain his health and get him back with the band on stage again.

Because of this and potentially more treatments to come, I have put together a fund for Phil so that people from around the world can make donations to help him with his enormous medical bills. I have set up a page for this Fund and you can visit it at the link below, for more information on how you can contribute.

Feel free to spread the word and share this link with your friends. Any donation, no matter what the size, will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,

Begovic goes on ‘strike’ to get a move away

Posted in Football, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership on August 25, 2010 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Asmir Begovic refused to play for us last night as he angles for a move to Chelsea. Meanwhile it appears his replacement could be Watford’s Scott Loach. More on the story here…

Stoke City 2-1 Blackpool (Carling Cup Rd 2)

Posted in Football, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership on August 24, 2010 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Goals from Jon Walters and Tuncay saw us through despite a late on Blackpool goal. Typical Stoke though sitting back on a 2-0 lead instead of going for more goals!

Sonko is back at his best scoring an own goal in the Pompey game. By’eck he is utter pants that boy…

Well done Brentford in beating Hull City 2-1.

Begovic, Tuncay and Kitson off?

Posted in Football, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership on August 24, 2010 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, who we only signed from Pompey in January, looks set to leave as he is not in the starting line-upor on the bench for tonight’s game against Shrewsbury Town in the Carling Cup. Chelsea seems most likely but possibly Fulham with a bid as well.

Dave Kitson has been linked with a £2m move to QPR although Pompey and Cardiff are other possible clubs interested in signing him. Ryan Shotton could be set for a loan move to Pompey whilst Wigan culd be signing Tuncay.

Still no interest for Tom Soares though!

Incoming? Marc Wilson from, you guessed it, Pompey a very decent midfielder. Daft rumour of the day was Peter Crouch from Spurs!

Stoke City 1-2 Tottenham

Posted in Football, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership on August 21, 2010 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Bloody referees! Disallowed goal for us as Peter Crouch had a touch of the Thiery Henry’s and handballed the ball back over the line. Ricardo Fuller got his first goal of the season but looks like we have lost Big Mama for possibly the season with a snapped cruciate ligament. Get well soon Mama!

We need 3 or 4 new players in before tranfer deadline day on August 31st. Kitson may be off to join fellow Srokies Sonko and Dickinson at Pompey although they have reached their loan limit on players aged over 23. They may instead turn to signing Ryan Shotton as he’s under 23.

Shrewsbury Town next in the Carling Cup come on you rip roarin’ Potters!

Jon Walters signs for Stoke

Posted in Football, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership on August 18, 2010 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Pulis gets his man after a two year pursuit as Ipswich Town striker Jon Walters signed today for an intial fee of £2.75m, rising to £3.5m with add ons and on a four year contract. Not a signing met with great fanfare by some Stoke fans but I am sure he will give us more options (and speed!) down the right wing plus another option upfront. Welcome Mr Walters to the best team in the land!

It must be like Christmas come early for Tony Pulis as first he signs Kenwyne Jones last week, another long term target and now he lands Walters.

Walters and Wheater on their way?

Posted in Football, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership on August 18, 2010 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Despite a late bid by QPR and interest from West Brom it seems Ipswich Town’s Jon Walters could sign for us possibly today. Another long term Pulis target Middlesboro’s David Wheater is another being tipped with a move to Stoke.

Not much else as yet and it does seem as though Liam Lawrence will be with us at least until January as any move to Celtic seems dead in the water.

Author interview – John Osborne

Posted in Authors, News, Poetry on August 16, 2010 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Author and poet John Osborne is worthy of your attention if like me you love radio. He trawled the online and FM radio stations for the highly readable ‘Radio Head’. He is also a poet and has a new book out, ‘The Newsagent’s Window’. For more info pop over to his publisher’s page http://authors.simonandschuster.co.uk/John-Osborne/65784601

1. What are you currently up to?

At the moment most of what I’m doing involved poetry. In the last couple of months I’ve performed at Glastonbury, Latitude, Port Eliot, I’m about to head up to the Edinburgh fringe. I’m also working on a new book of poems for Nasty Little Press, who I worked with earlier on this year to publish my first poetry pamphlet What if men burst in wearing balaclavas. Hopefully something will be out by next summer.

2. After writing ‘Radio Head’ were there any radio stations that you discovered that have now become firm favourites? Have you listened to the rebranded Virgin Radio now called Absolute?

Yes, Absolute is one of the stations I listen to most regularly now. Frank Skinner and Dave Gorman have brilliant shows, they’ve adapted really well to radio. Geoff Lloyd’s Hometime show is one I always try and listen to, as well as his Sunday evening show where he plays more alternative music. It’s great that Absolute seem to be embracing interesting and original music and shows – their playlist is really varied now.

I also listen to 6music a lot, it’s much better than it was when I wrote the chapter about it in Radio Head. Lauren Laverne’s show is one of my favourites, the range of music she plays is pretty incredible. I also love Tom Ravenscroft on Friday nights.

3. Who are your radio presenter/DJ heroes and why?

Well the big one was obviously John Peel, he changed everything, discovering his show when I was about 15 was one of the biggest things of my life. Apart from him I just love people who make entertaining radio. Geoff Lloyd, Danny Baker, I think Jonathan Ross will be missed. But Peel will always be special to so many.

4. How did the idea come about for your latest book on newsgents’ window ads?

I moved into a house that was completely unfurnished; it didn’t have beds, chairs, a toaster, kettle. And I saw an advert for a single bed, then an advert for a garage sakle and gradually I started to pick up bits and pieces. The people I met were fascinating, everything I bought had a story behind it and I started to use newsagents windows more and more.  My book is about the community of people who use these windows, a world without ebay and gumtree.

5. How did the ‘Homework’ events come about? What have been the highlights to date?

I’m part of a poetry collective called Aisle16. Homework is a monthly night at Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club where we try out new material. It’s called Homework because it’s pieces we’ve written especially for the night, we theme the events so it’s just trying to stretch ourselves. One project we did was called Local Boys Done Good, where 5 members of Aisle16 all did gigs in the towns where we grew up in. The most recent night we had about 150 people in, so it’s getting pretty well known. We’ve also been able to invite a few special guests along, people whose work we all really love and wanted to be part of the night. My big highlight was definitely getting Jon Ronson along, the writer and filmmaker. We’re all big fans of his work. Also we had Tim Key who then went on to win the Edinburgh Comedy Award, Kate Nash, Kevin Eldon. They’re fun nights to do, we’re planning next year already.

6. Does the advent of readers like Kindle and I Pad now mean the days of the published book are numbered?

No, not at all. I think the kindle will be popular and people will use it. Clunky things like dictionaries and encyclopedieas will struggle, but people will always buy books. I hope so, anyway.

Wolves 2-1 Stoke City

Posted in Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership on August 14, 2010 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Not a great opening to the season going down to two goals in the space of two minutes and losing star striker Kenwyne Jones to injury after eighteen minutes is not good. Hopefully he will be back soon as we don’t want to rely on Big Mama up front :(

Beattie leaves and Dickinson off on loan

Posted in Football, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership on August 13, 2010 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

James Beattie today signed for Rangers - their first signing in nearly two years. Beattie was a key signing back in January 2009 as his goals helped keep us up but last season he seemed disinterested and had the famous ‘towel gate’ showdown with Pulis. Based on last season we are well rid…

Carl Dickinson has joined Portsmouth on a season long loan. A good player and he should do well at Pompey where he hooks-up with team mate Sonko.

No new signings as yet although rumours are that Kovac and Jon Walters will sign early next week.

Summer In’s…

Florent Cuvlier (Portsmouth, undisclosed fee)

Carlo Nash (Everton, free)

Kenwyne Jones (Sunderland, £8m)

Summer Out’s…

Amdy Faye – released

James Beattie – Rangers

Carl Dickinson & Sonko – Portsmouth (season long loan)

Andy Griffin – Reading (undisclosed fee)

Steve Simonsen – Sheff Utd (free)

Diego Arismendi – Barnsley (season long loan)

Nanthiel Wedderburn – Northampton (free)

Salif Diao – offered a contract; yet to sign

Kenwyne Jones signs for us :)

Posted in Football, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership on August 12, 2010 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Stoke have signed Sunderland striker Kenwyne Jones for a club record fee of £8m. A cracking signing and it seems we maybe after another striker as well.

James Beattie is mulling over a possible move to Rangers, although Liam Lawrence’s on/off move to Celtic seems to be off.

West Ham’s Radoslav Kovac could sign for us before the weekend as it is now down to the player to decide.

Wigan have upped their interest in Tuncay. Hopefully he will stay as he has had a full pre-season with us now and looks ready to score a bagful of goals.

Lawrence set for Celtic switch

Posted in Football, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership on August 9, 2010 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Liam Lawrence looks set to join Celtic this week as Aidan McCready completes his move from Celtic to Spartak Moscow.

Press rumours have Chelsea eyeing out keeper Asmir Begovic - hands off! Mind you with Hilarious as your back-up goalie you can see why they need a decent goalkeeper…

Still no new signings although the old Carlton Cole rumour is still doing the rounds and is now joined by Robbie Keane (Spurs) on loan and a permanent move for Blackburn’s Jason Roberts (he ticks the Pulis boxes but please no!!!).

Stoke drew 0-0 with Wrexham on their final pre-season friendly with Ricardo Fuller sent off.

Loic Remy flys in…then he’s off!

Posted in Uncategorized on August 5, 2010 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Peter Coates laid on his private jet this morning as Nice striker Loic Remy flew in for a look around Stoke (lucky man!) and many Stokies were get all excited he would sign (myslef included) but he wants to see two other clubs next week, West Ham and Liverpool. Ah well time to push on…

Kenwyn Jones seems more likely now plus no other club seems interested in him. Ipswich turned down our bid for Jon Walters with their manager Roy Keane hinting Walters will leave but there is some way to go yet in haggling over a fee etc.

Kevin Prince-Boetang is also rumoured to be lined up but again no firm evidence of talks with the player.

One good piece of news is Portsmouth getting a successful hearing today and avoiding going out of business.

Walters and Jones to Stoke?

Posted in Football, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership on August 4, 2010 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

The ‘Daily Mail’ has a story saying Stoke have had a bid of around £3m accepted by Ipswich Town for their striker Jon Walters, a player we have been linked with for almost as long as Joe Ledley. He could possibly be a Stoke player by the weekend. A useful signing if it comes off and cover for the left and right wings plus he can play as a striker.

Another long term target is Sunderland’s Kenwyne Jones who SkySports are reporting we are lining a bid up for. Another good player on his day but I am not sure he’d come to us.  We did have him on loan back in his days at Southampton.

Liam Lawrence’s hopes of a move to Celtic hinge on the sale of Aiden McGeady.

Bristol Rovers 1-2 Stoke City

Posted in Football, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership on August 3, 2010 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Goals from Tuncay and Ricardo Fuller sealed another pre-season friendly win. The Ginger Ninja was at Worcester City where a Stoke XI earned a hard foight 0-0 draw. Carlo Nash was in goal and Andrew Davies was in the starting XI but went of injured.

Glen Whelan is a doubt for the opening game against Wolves and Rory Delap & Matthew Etherington have also picked up knocks in the pre-season friendlies.

No new signings as yet but I am going for a new face by this weekend…hopefully!

Burnley 1-2 Stoke City

Posted in Football, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership on August 1, 2010 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Michael Tonge and Tuncay scored the Stoke goals although Glen Whelan and Rory Delap both went off injured. Hopefully both will be back for the KO against Wolves in just under a fortnight’s time.

Meanwhile has Pulis has dismissed the rumours linking us to Carlton Cole.
