Polictal parties celebrity backing – does it gain votes?

In this world of celebrity culture does celebrity endorsement help swing votes? There is no conclusive proof but it certainly helps raise the profile of parties and an oft quoted example is that Ophrah adopting Barack Obama’s campign could have brought in one million votes.

Sir Sean Connery doubtless helps the SNP and fellow knight of the realm, Sir Michael Caine was recently seen out and about with David Cameron. The Tories can also call on Take That’s Gary Barlow (although that could be seen as hinderance by some…), Carol Vorderman and Bestselling author Frederick Forsyth is a long time supporter as is fellow author Jeffrey Archer, although many  like him to keep a low profile now.

Labour can wheel out ‘Harry Potter’ author JK Rowling, actor Richard Wilson (who recently narated the party’s manifesto for those with visual impairments), Eddie Izzard and former Dr Who actor David Tennant.

The Liberal Democrats have had John Cleese onboard for many years and can also boast Brian Eno, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Rory Bremner and Kate Winslet.

Even UKIP have a few celeb backers inlcuding former children’s TV presenter Floella Benjamin, actress Joan Collins and former cricketer Sir Geoffrey Boycott.

The English Democrats have TV presenter and journalist Gary Bushell.

Plaid Cymru have TV weather  presenter Sian Lloyd.
