World Book Day has called on the country to ‘share a million stories’ as part of a campaign to ‘change children’s lives by making story-sharing the habit of a lifetime’. New research from the National Literacy Trust shows that fewer children and young people are reading daily, yet it’s also true that shared reading for just ten minutes a day can have ‘long-lasting impacts’ on a child’s life and future.

In this research, the National Literacy Trust found that only 25.% of children said they read daily in their free time, the lowest level since the Trust’s first survey in 2005. 53% of children and young people said they enjoy reading ‘very much’ or ‘quite a lot’, the lowest level since 2013.
