Ivan Gunn (Faithealer) interview

Keyboards player and composer Ivan Gunn (ex-Pride/Balance Of Power) is back in action with a new melodic hard rock band Faithealer. Their debut album ‘Welcome To The Edge Of The World’ is out now and worthy of a place in your music collection.

1. What are you currently up to?

Currently doing as much promo and stuff for this album and we are writing and demoing for the next FAITHEALER CD. Personally i am doing some licensing for some labels to get their artists released in Japan, also writing some material for a few other artists as well as setting up some co writes for next year with some very cool people.

2. Could you take us through the songs on the new album ‘Welcome To The Edge Of The World’

WHO WILL STOP THE RAIN- I wrote this inspired by footage I saw of a couple jumping from the twin towers during 9-11, really moved me, and made me wonder when the madness that rules this world will end…………….

STRONGER-having felt strength from past experiences in both bands and my personal life, this is a song of hope and defiance………love doesn’t kill you just makes you stronger, it’s worth the risk.

JUST GIVE ME TONIGHT- we all have people in our lives we have lost or from the past that we have been inspired by, I have always wished I could get the chance to tell the person who made me who Ii am how grateful and how important they are to me, just for one night bring them back and let them know.

LAY DOWN AND DIE FOR YOU-a song from the heart about lost love and the lengths to get that back to make amends.

LAST TEARDROP FALLS-when you care about someone you have to be there til the end through good and bad, this is a song about the strength of heart and commitment.

TELL ME-this a song about letting go of someone who has lost the fight for life, leaving them with the confidence that you will see them again, you will always be there for them til you meet again.

THEY SAY-all about preconceiving things all lot of people give up before they start cos they listen to what others say and don’t risk cos they don’t trust the inner voice, also some continue to carry baggage from one relationship to the other.

HEAVEN FROM HERE-when you look into the eyes of the one you love, there is no where on earth you would rather be, you need nothing else, forever is in there eyes and your heaven is where they are…………….

SECOND SIGHT-deals with the subject of reincarnation, and the idea that when you come back your soul goes looking for the soul mate you previously had. Sometimes you have to let you defences down to let them in or even to find them.

STILL ALIVE-a song of hope declaring yourself strong and positive and alive even though the love you thought you had has gone.

WELCOME TO THE EDGE OF THE WORLD-an emotional anthem with a chorus to die for!! when you care about someone or something you will go to the ends of the earth for them, this is telling the ones you love that if they need you whatever it takes and however bad things get for them you will be waiting at the edge of there world for them.

3. How did Faithealer come together?

JASON AND myself have been friends for a long long time, after the demise of Pride I took a lil break and bumped into him. Jason was the singer in the pre balance of power band HEAVEN and EARTH and when we got together for a chat it seemed we had both gone full circle and it would be fun to write some tunes together just for fun, but the songs sounded so cool we decided to demo them and the rest is history………….lol

4. You have been involved in a few bands from a promotion side such as signing Shotgun Symphony for Now & Then Records and Den Of Thieves. What do you look for in a band you are willing to help promote and/or get signed to a label?

Honesty and songs are the key ingredient. A proper SINGER, too many bands are ruined by being great players but having no songs or no singer or worse both.

You don’t have to reinvent the well if your genuine about what ya do.

5. Pride called it a day back in 2005. Is there any chance the band would ever get back together again say for a Firefest appearance? What were the highlights of being in Pride?

Think FURYON are gonna be massive so I don’t think PRIDE will ever be back together. I think at some point I would like to do something with Mat as we definitely have songwriting chemistry, I hope Chris will play some solos for me next time round as he is simply one of the best on the planet.

Highlight was recording FAR FROM THE EDGE at Parr Street studios (rock band genesis studio) was great fun and great to work with Pete Coleman. Also, when Ii got the deal with TOSHIBA/EMI in Japan that was pretty awesome too

6. What have been the live highlights for you and why?

On the live front me and jason did a showcase in London back in the heaven and earth days it was over a hundred degrees in the room. And the lead player learnt the set in the car on the way up lol

7. Who are your main musical influences and what made you want to be a musician?

My main musical influences are Greg Guiffria, Jonathan Cain. I don’t view myself as a musician Ii view myself as a songwriter. I think it is a great way to evoke my emotions and I always want to have a connection through music, we all know how OPENS ARMS, DONT STOP BELIEVING,WHOS CRYING NOW impressed on ours lives and where we were and what we were doing, that’s a good song I want to learn to be that good…………..still learning

8. In this age of downloads and declining CD sales has the internet helped you get your music out there or has it in some ways hindered it by websites offering free downloads etc

The download thing is a nightmare. We spend 18 months working from beginning to release for someone to come along and download it for free lol every CD sale we lose affects us we finance it ourselves we do it all with no backing, but on the flipside it gets ya name out there but it is killing niche genres as it will get to the point when it will be costing us to do the album and nothing will come back…………………

9. Do you hope to get signed to a label or do you prefer the self-promotion way that gives you more independence in the way you do things?

Been signed to some pretty big labels and seen both sides. We are signed to KING Records in Japan AND I have a sub publishing deal with FUJI PACIFIC in Japan. I am happy with that, outside of Japan although its a lot more work at least we know where the CD’s are where they are going and I negotiated deals in Germany, the UK and USA for the finished product thus far its working out pretty cool.

10. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time away from music?

I have two boys 6 and 15 who rule my world we do a lot of footie playing and watching Chelsea FC!! Love my movies and a good book!

Done a lot of travelling and love to swim, try to live each day like it’s my last

Anything else to add and a message for your fans…
