Phil Vincent interview

Phil Vincent is as ever a busy man with a recently released second album from D’Ercole entitled ‘Rock Scars’ out now on Z Records and the same label release the second Legion album ‘Code Of Honour’. All this and some more of his excellent cover versions now up on I Tunes…

1. What are you currently up to?

A: I have just released the new D’Ercole CD “ROCK SCAR” on Z Records. LEGION will be releasing our 2nd CD “Code of Honour” in April 12 and we will be appearing at Z Rock May 15th at the Asylum club in Birmingham.

2. Could you take us through the songs on the excellent new Legion album ‘Code Of Honour’?

A: Thank you for the compliments Jason. Fortunately, I’ve met a lot of people in my life, both good and bad, which always inspires me. I’ve been lied to more times then i choose to count but those lies always leave a lasting impression on me and i find myself using these experiences for songwriting inspiration. “Hard Times” is a very good example. It’s about a real prick. He thought everyone was stupid and didn’t see how he was manipulating them and one day everything changed and he became one of us!!!! It’s like the bad cop that ends up getting sent to jail with all the people he’s arrested!!! Very ugly but well deserved!!!!!!

“Steal the Show” will be our opener at Z Rock may 15th. It’s a fist pumping, get loud, in your face kind of rock song that always gets me going!! 😉

“Long Way Down” follows the same principals as “Hard Times” only it takes the perspective of an outsider looking at someone being manipulated but can’t say anything to them. “Every friend you have right now will be gone when you fall”. That line says it all!!!!!!!!!!! Hey that rhymed!! I should have put it in the song! LOL!!

“Living with the Past” is about a stalker. From his perspective, he’s having a relationship but from the girl’s it’s all predatory!! I got the idea from a movie who’s name escapes me right now.

“Ridin’ on the Wind” is about someone who’s down on their luck and turns to Jack D for help. It happens a lot more than you think Jason and I’m living proof of that.

Down in Flames” deals with a good friend of mine’s suicide. Everyone saw it coming for years but no one could end his deep depression until one day he took care of it himself. He left a wife and 2 kids behind and not a day goes by where I don’t think of him.

“Take Your Time” is about just that!! people think it’s a race no matter what they do in life but it’s really about enjoying our time here on earth and that means slowing down and spending quality time with the people you love because we’re all going to die someday and the worst feeling I could have is regret.

3. How is the album recorded? Do you send over your vocal parts to Vince O’Regan to add to the music?

A: Yes. Vince sends the instrumentals to me. I write the lyrics and record all my parts and then send him WAV files with just my vocals and he does the rest.

4. Were you pleased with the reviews and fan reactions to the Legion debut album?

A: I try to stay away from reviews but I really believe in this band and the songs speak for themselves so I’m so happy with the results.

5. You’ve done a couple of covers recently. Do you have any plans to do anymore, perhaps a full album of covers at some point in the future?

A: oh yes. “Feelin’ Stronger Everyday” by Chicago, “My Love” by Sir Paul, “Hot Blooded” by Foreigner and maybe a few others. They’ll be released on Itunes. Check out for 5 brand new free downloads. Go to the “Fan Area and enjoy.

6. Have you been pleased with the reviews/feedback on D’Ercole’s latest album ‘Rock Scar’? Any plans to bring D’Ercole over to Europe at some stage?

A: I try to avoid reading reviews because my goal is to make the best collection of songs I can and I try so hard to create something that everyone will love even though I know that’s not realistic and to read a scolding review would affect the way I approach my songwriting so I stay away from them all to avoid writing songs for the wrong reasons. I have to be honest and create what comes naturally from the inside, not write to try and please someone who gave me a bad review. The thing that used to bother me the most was the review from someone who didn’t listen to the whole CD. They skip around and hear pieces of songs. Like I said earlier, it’s not a race……put on song 1 and sit down in the middle of the room, crank the volume as high as humanly tolerable and by the end of the album you’ll have a pretty good idea what to say about it. Good or bad, but as long as you actually listened to the album you’re going to speak about and probably influence other people to buy or not buy, then it’s ok.

7. How easy/hard is it to get a decent run of live dates? Ideally which bands would you like to tour with and why?

A: Here in the US. Forget it!!! Nothing for a new band playing originals but overseas it’s wide open. I would love to play with Winger. They’re fantastic and I’m a huge fan of Kip and Reb. Not to be pretentious but I compare myself and Vince to them. They have a great working relationship and the songs prove that. “Karma” was the best CD they have done in my opinion. It’s a masterpiece.

8. If you could create a fantasy band line-up who would be in it and why?

A: Sir Paul on Vocals & Bass, Kip on piano & Vocals, Paul Gilbert on Guitar, Mike Portnoy on Drums …………………………..and I would just sit there and watch!!!!!! 🙂

9. Has it been an advantage being signed to a label like Z Records in that they can take on a lot of the promotion side of things? Have you seen your own profile amongst rock fans increase of late as well?

A: very good question. I expected a lot of people to disregard Legion just because we were on Z and all the crap that was being thrown around about them but I saw that as a challenge going in. I talked to Mark originally and got the feeling this guy really had a love of the music so I signed on with D’Ercole for 3 albums and from that he introduced me to Vince and Legion was born so I would have NEVER met Vince and we would have never had the opportunity to create those songs together. Mark has been the most professional person at any label I have dealt with. He constantly updates me and makes his payments on time. What more could you ask for?

10. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time away from music?

A: Lifting weights, hitting the heavy bag, spending time with my family and friends, watching ice hockey, just living life and trying to make the most of what I have.
