More hedgerow disappears in Didcot…

Posted in Didcot, Family life, News with tags , , , , , , on November 7, 2018 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Taylor Wimpey destroying more hedgerow. During the past couple of years since moving here it has been host to lots of birdlife including sparrows, starlings, wood pigeons, robin, dunnock, wren, blue & coal tits and magpies. The wood pigeons and magpies did nest here and in a nearby tree, also removed by the developers.

There is still a little bit of hedgerow left, although not much cover left for the smaller birds and nesting sites hasve gone. Having a bit of hedgerow at the bottom of a new home should be a good selling point? I guess it doesn’t fit the neat new home plots they wish to create, which makes a mockery of their supposed environmentally focussed development plans.

Only a small piece of hedgerow granted, however it won’t be replaced and it has dispersed local birdlife and wildlife, which is being replicated daily throughout the GWP development. I don’t disagree new homes are needed, however brownfield sites such as the power station and an overall plan as part of the Didcot Garden Town plan should be adhered to, not just greedy developers building and be damned to the consequences on local wildlife and infrastructure.

The current allotment plan you can comment on until this Friday 9th November 2018 by visiting here

It sounds good, new allotments with parking, however as always the devil is in the detail and if approved it will see spoil from elsewhere on GWP used to raise the level of allotments; a busy footpath to West Hagbourne closed (one nearby has been closed since December 2017 until 2020!); high trees planted blocking views of the nearby countryside and increase in flooding risk.

Didcot Town 1-1 Aylesbury

Good FA Cup Preliminary Round tie where Dicot played well but lacked that final finish before goal, which is not surprising as their leading goal scorer from last season Felipe left the club midweek. However, the club have signed a replacement in Aaron Woodley from Swindon Supermarine.

Didcot had the chance to seal the win late on with two goalmouth clearances by Aylesbury, who had a beast of a number six. His shirt pulling would make Ryan Shawcross blush 🙂 The referee was bizarre with his free kicks and bookings, missing some obvious ones yet giving them for seemingly innocuous things.

The replay is on Tuesday Septmeber 4th, which Didcot back in league action on Monday away at North Leigh and then home on Saturday 1st Septmeber to Cambridge City.

Didcot Town start their FA Cup campaign with a Preliminary Round game at home to fellow Southern League Division One Central rivals Aylesbury FC. Aylesbury have lost both their league games to date, whilst Didcot have won one, lost one. Didcot will be without Felipe Barcelos who left to join Moneyfields FC this week, despite playing and scoring in Didcot’s win on Tuesday night over Aylesbury Utd.

Whoever wins the tie still has four more qualifying rounds to go before the First Round proper…

Third Round Qualifying Weekend of Saturday 6 October 2018

Fourth Round Qualifying Weekend of Saturday 20 October 2018

Didcot Town 4-0 Aylesbury Utd

Since moving to Didcot I have adopted my local team Didcot Town FC, who play in the fourth tier of non-league football. It was an entertaining game against Aylesbury United with goals from Felipe Barcelos, Adam Learoyd, Matt Woodley and Callum McNish. There were moments of great passing by Didcot and McNish was a livewire, along with the pace of Barcelos. Aylesbury United had a better second half although their shooting was pretty woeful at times.

I have taken my young son along and he loved it as you are right next to the action and it feels more ‘real’ as you are closer to the pitch and players. The standard of football is good as well, a fair few aerial balls and hoofing, but then as a lifelong Stoke City supporter I am sued to that 🙂 I would highly recommend getting along to see and support your local non-league team as it a refreshing change from the endless media focus on the Premier League. Plus at Didcot the older fans make some very witty and entertaining comments, a cross between the deadpan humour of the late, great Les Dawson and the Muppets’ Statler and Waldorf.

However, since Tuesday night’s game the club’s star striker Felipe Barcelos has joined Evo-Stik League South Division One South side Moneyfields (who Didcot been 5-0 in a pre-season friendly). The club was made aware yesterday that following a 7 day approach from Moneyfields that Felipe has decided to join the Portsmouth based club.

Save Hagbourne Fields

hf
Taylor Wimpy has submitted revised matters for Hagbourne fields north of the 900+ homes application. Creating allotments, with 30 car parking spaces, opens space and forest area. This also sounds good until you look at the details. Please read the information and application links below.

Main concerns are.
1. Unnecessary major re-landscaping with unwanted spoil.
2. Loss of views of the North Wessex Downs
3. Excessive car park
4. Increase risk of flooding due to proposed landscaping.

Please help us stop Taylor Wimpey’s continued onslaught of plans to rob us of our amazing country side.

Save Hagbourne Fields

Posted in Didcot, Family life, News with tags , , , , , , on May 15, 2018 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

hfTaylor Wimpeys application is now open for comment at on SODC’s website. Comments have to be submitted by the 23rd May and please visit the Facebook page for ideas on your comments over the proposed plans.

The plan is for 900+ houses to be built on fields between Didcot and East Hagbourne village which would destroy fields and natural habitats further, plus increase the risk of flooding and more transport congestion, pressure on local services, etc. There is already a Didcot Garden Town plan in place and this proposal is not part of this.
