Valencia 1-0 Stoke City (2-0 agg)

So our Europa League adventure ended but not without a respectable performance from a mainly squad player side. Diego Arismendi showed his worth but most likely the last we will see of him this season now sadly. It’s been fun and we gave it a good go with some memorable results.

Next up Swansea City at home, a side who possibly pass it more than Valenica do!

Stoke City 0-1 Valencia

A wonder strike sealed an away win for Valencia as we never seemed to have that final killer touch in the box. Palacios and Walters were woeful – hopefully Whitehead or Whelan will start next week. Jerome proved a handful when he came on and Shotton had Stoke’s best shot on goal. We need to recoup and regroup quickly as we don’t want an FA Cup defeat away at Crawley Town on Sunday. Come on Stoke!

We take on Valencia in the Europa League KO stages and we are at home first. If we win this tie we face the winners of  TRABZONSPOR/PSV EINDHOVEN. Ties to be played w/c 16th Feb with return legs w/c 23rd Feb.

Come on Stoke!

Besiktas 3-1 Stoke City

Bang goes our 100% record in Europe but then we had already qualified and Pulis fielded a second XI including a start for Arismendi and Salif Diao in defence! Fuller gave us an early lead but in the second half it fell apart with Upson red carded. We finished a respectable second in our group.

Fulham failed to qualify after a late equaliser saw them go out.

Stoke City 1-1 Dynamo Kiev

What a great result and a lovely goal from Kenwyne Jones laid on perfectly by Jermaine Pennant. We are the first English club to qualify for the knock out stages and unbeaten as yet in the group stages.

Palacios showed some good passing although he is nowhere near ‘Pulis fit’. Kiev did have us under the cosh in the first half as we never really got into our fast paced game wich normally troubles the European teams. We reverted to this in the second half and looked the better side. What a big lift as well to see Fuller on for the last twenty mintues. He may not be back to his best yet after a long lay off but no-one causes opposition defenders as many headaches as Mr Fuller.

Well done Tony Pulis and Stoke!

Everton up next away…

Macabi Tel Aviv 1-2 Stoke City

Goals from Dean Whitehead and Peter Crouch took us nearer the knock out stages and we need a draw from one of our last two games to qualify. Not the greatest of games and Macabi Tel Aviv it has to be said would struggle in League Two based on their performances to date. Lots of tippy tappy stuff a la West Brom but no decent finishers. Good to see Danny Higginbotham back and Diego Arismendi get a ten minute run out.

Bolton away next on Sunday and boy will they be gunning for revenge for the FA Cup SF defeat. We have yet to win after a Europa League game this season and it would be good to break that duck against Bolton. Hopefully Shawcross and Wilson will be back from injury.

Stoke City 3-0 Maccabi Tel Aviv

Goals from Shotton, Jerome and Jones saw Stoke wrap up three points within the first half hour. The game was marred though by the sending off of Jerome for his second yellow card and dissent to the referee (who was very poor it has to be said). He will need to learn quickly that Pulis does not like his players giving verbal abuse to refs and prefers us to play on.

Shotton was superb last night and has come on leaps and bounds as a player and Jerome was a handful for the Maccabi defence.

Funny to see their player Ziv red carded for kikcing his boot at the linesman – a comedy classic!

Next up Arsenal away…we need to start improving in games directly after a Europa League game and given Arsenal’s recent good run of form a draw will be a good result.
