Quiz night to help fund local cancer scanners and life changing medical research

Posted in Fundraising, News, Paul Strickland Scanner Centre with tags , on August 31, 2018 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

A quiz night in aid of a charity which supports local people affected by cancer and other serious conditions will take place at Rickmansworth Golf Club in November, it has been announced.

The quiz night, compered by quiz master Guy Allen will help fund new MRI, CT and PET-CT scanners at Paul Strickland Scanner Centre (Mount Vernon Hospital), as well as help fund life changing medical research which takes place at the centre.

Paul Strickland Scanner Centre is an independent medical charity which provides CT, MRI and PET scanning to mainly local people. Staff at the centre use the scanners to help diagnose and monitor cancer and other serious conditions, and undertake medical research to help improve treatment and care for future patients.
Claire Strickland, the charity’s Chief Executive, said: “This should be a great night out, with great team and individual prizes, plus a raffle.
“High quality scanners and medical research save and improve the lives of people affected by cancer and other serious conditions. By joining us for the quiz night you’re supporting local people in the community who are facing one of the biggest challenges of their lives, so please come along and support them.”

Book your place today by visiting or calling 01923 844290 during office hours. The quiz night will take place at The Fairway Inn, Rickmansworth Golf Club, on Friday 30 November at 7.30pm. The entry fee is £15 per person (6 people per team) including supper. Cash bar, over 18s only.

Walk All Over Cancer update

Day three of ‘Walk All Over Cancer’ which you have to aim to do 10,000 steps per day to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. The fundraising is up to £145 which is really good. A BIG thank you to all our sponsors to date.

It is fun, but tough, doing 10,000 steps per day as I am still recovering from glandular fever  (GF) which comes back if I do too much. However, these relapses are not as bad as the early days with GF. I still take daily vitamins (including echinacea which I’d recommend), avoid caffeine and drinking plenty of water. I do give in to the odd cake and sugar treat 🙂

Water is good for flushing the Epstein-Barr virus out of your system. General advice is to drink at least eight large glasses of water a day.

GF seems to affect a lot of young athletes like Olympic gymnast Max Whitlock and promising young golfer Amber Ratcliffe. They all go on to full recovery, so if you currently have GF take heart as you will recover it just takes time and a sensible balance of rest and gradually increasing your activity levels.

Walk All Over Cancer fundraising

As I continue to recover from glandular fever I am joining my wife Andrea in her Walk All Over Cancer fundraising. Basically you pledge to walk 10,000 steps per day during the whole of March. Based on the average person’s stride it’s 5 miles (or 8 km) and you should have clocked up 150 miles by the end of the month – about the distance from London to Manchester. Easy?! Well considering back in November I couldn’t walk more than five minutes without being exhausted this seems a perfect way to get my fitness back, tell GF to jog on and most importantly raise funds for a worthy cause.

Any donations much appreciated and even if you can just spread the word about the event, Cancer Research or provide a word of encouragement, it all counts and is gratefully received.

Walk for Parkinson’s UK

I am doing the Walk for Parkinson’s at Leeds Castle on September 11th in memory of my dad.

My dad was diagnosed with Parkinson’s back in 2007. He never complained about having the disease despite being in pain and as the years progressed it affected his daily life more. Parkinson’s UK do invaluable research and provide support for both people with Parkinson’s and their families. Please do donate if you can and any help in plugging my fundraising would be much appreciated. Thank you so much.

JustGiving sends your donation straight to Parkinson’s UK and automatically reclaims Gift Aid if you are a UK taxpayer, so your donation is worth even more.

Sparky’s back running for the Paul Strickland Scanner Centre

Yes I was taking a year off fundraising, but then my virtual trainer (they have kept my running going despite actually never having a run with me!) told me how their partner was diagnosed with throat cancer last year. They are coming through that now and hopefully will be okay.

They went through a neck dissection, tonsillectomy, two weeks of chemo and six weeks daily radiotherapy. During this time they used the scanning facilities provided by the Paul Strickland Scanner Centre.

Any donation is most welcome and even if you can’t donate please do spread the word of the great work done at this centre.

Oh and the Sparky nickname comes from a work colleague who gave me that being a Stoke supporter. I ran the 2014 Ealing Half Marathon in my Sparky top:
