Whelan wanted & Shaqiri off?

Posted in Football, football transfers, Stoke City FC, The Premiership with tags , , , , , on June 21, 2017 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Bar the signing of Darren Fletcher on a free from West Brom, it has been a quiet start to the summer transfer season for Stoke – although the transfer window doesn’t officially open until July 1.

Glen Whelan has had an offer from Aston Villa turned down by the club and now Derby County are interested in signing him. It does look as though come the new season he will be playing for a new club.

Shaqiri is being linked again with a move to Roma – hope he does stay a Stoke player next season. Imbula could be off to Nice on loan as Stoke look to offload our flop record signing. Joselu could be off to Malaga on a permanent move, another Hughes signing who failed to impress.

One former Stoke player we could see at the Bet365 stadium next season is Dean Whitehead, who has been offered a new contract by newly promoted Huddersfield Town, where he has been for the past two seasons.

Pre-season fixtures:
Monday July 10 Neuchâtel Xamax FCS (A) Uhrencup

Wednesday July 12 Berner Sport Club Young Boys (A) Uhrencup

Saturday July 15 Monaco (A)

Tuesday July 25 Sheffield United (A) 7.45pm

Saturday July 29 Bolton Wanderers (A) 3pm

Sunday July 30 Crewe Alexandra (A) 3pm

Premier League fixtures are out

Posted in Football, football transfers, Stoke City FC, The Premiership on June 14, 2017 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Stoke City face Everton away on August 12 and then our first home game of the season is against Arsenal on August 19. Final game of the season is away at Swansea. Full fixture lists can be found here on the Premier League’s official site.

Tough start for us but then often good to play top teams early on in the season before they get into their stride, although we never do well at the start of the season under Mark Hughes!

Transfer wise still quiet, although we have been linked with young Hull City left back Josh Tymon. Aston Villa have made a £500k bid for Glen Whelan which has been turned down by the club. With the signing of Darren Fletcher it looks like Whelan could be leaving the club this summer.

Darren Fletcher joins on a free transfer

Stoke City have completed their first signing of the summer landing former West Brom captain Darren Fletcher on a free transfer. He has signed a two year contract with an option of a third year. A good signing on a free.

Given leaves, Cameron signs new contract

Shay Given has been released by Stoke, along with fellow goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann. Stoke are also releasing under-23 squad players Liam Edwards, Harry Isted, Joel Taylor and George Waring.

Wilfred Bony has ended his loan spell and returns to Man City. Fellow loanee Bruno Martins Indi has also left, although hopefully the club will look to sign him this summer.

Charlie Adam has a contract option of one further year and no news yet as to whether he will take this up. Stephen Ireland has been offered a short term contract as he continues to recover from injury.

Phil Bardsley has triggered a 12-month extension after falling out of contract, with Geoff Cameron has signed a two-year contract extension to 2020.

We certainly have an aging squad and be interesting to see if we bring any new players in this summer or relay on a couple of loan signings, plus some youngsters to get us through next season. The latter option is risky given our less than impressive season.

Brighton & Pompey promoted; Johnson extends contract

Brighton clinched promotion to the Premier League at the weekend, which will see a nice day trip down to the south coast for us next season. Looks like Newcastle will land the other automatic promotion spot, although both Reading and Huddersfield could catch them if they win all their remaining games and Newcastle slip-up.

Really pleased to see Portsmouth finally achieve promotion to League One. FA Cup winners in 2008 and then relegated from the Premier League in 2010 – not that long ago in the football world. It has taken them four seasons to escape League Two, a timely reminder to current Premier League fans of how a team can really drop like a stone. More recently we have Blackpool, who may clinch a play-off place in League Two, another team beset by off field problems that has seen the club on successive relegation’s since being relegated from the Premier League.

Stoke news and Glen Johnson has signed a one year extension to his current contract taking him up to the summer of 2018. Phil Bardsley and Charlie Adam are both awaiting news on whether their contracts will be renewed as both are out contract this summer.

Berahino drugs claim

Saido Berahino claims a spiked drink on a night our led to his recent drugs ban. He certainly didn’t enjoy his past couple of years at West Brom. Hopefully he will get on the score sheet this weekend away at Leicester.

Shaqiri look set to sit out the weekend again after picking up another knock whilst playing for Switzerland in the week. He could be another possible summer departure along with the likes of Bojan, Wolschied and Joselu.

One summer incoming transfer could be a season long loan of Chelsea starlet Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The Sentinel reported this in January and now the ‘Daily Mail’ have picked up on a possible summer move.

Unhappy Bony

Wilfred Bony has said in the local press today he wonders why he joined Stoke City. To be fair, based on his performances since joining us on a season long loan form Man City, the majority of Stoke fans are wondering exactly the same! He was superb at Swansea, however he has not really clicked at either Man City or with us. With the signing of Berahino he is not even making the bench at the moment and safe to say we won’t be signing him in the summer.

Better news with Ibrahim Afellay signing an extension to his contract which was due to run out in the summer. Should be a busy summer with a number of players out of contract, including Stephen Ireland and Shay Given, neither of whom look likely to be offered new deals.
