Football league trophy draw

Posted in Football, football transfers, Stoke City FC, The Premiership with tags , , , , on July 27, 2016 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Stoke have been drawn in northern group C with Bradford, Morecambe and Bury as part of the revamped Football league Trophy. From this season the League 1 and 2 clubs are joined by leading Academies from the Premiership and Championship, which includes Stoke. We will field an under 23’s team and have won this trophy back in 1992 and 2000.

Originally, 15 Premier League teams, along with Newcastle in the Championship, were invited to include Academy sides in the competition. However Arsenal, Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd, Newcastle and Tottenham have rejected the offers and been replaced by Blackburn, Brighton, Derby, Norwich, Reading and Wolves.

The first round will involve 16 groups of four teams organised on a regional basis, with each group including at least one club from each of League One and League Two. Teams will play each other once, either at home or away, with a penalty shoot-out in the event of a draw. The final will be at Wembley Stadium on Sunday April 2.

Choulay/Moha was involved in QPR’s friendly with Burton Albion last night and was listed as a trialist with a view to a possible loan move to QPR. Stoke signed him from Barcelona last summer although he has not made a first team appearance to date.

Julien N’Goy (who earned rave reviews for his performance against Preston at the weekend), Ollie Shenton , goalkeeper Daniel Gyollai, Joel Taylor, Eddy Lecygne and George Waring have all travelled with the first team squad to Orlando.

A late winner denied us a decent start to the Colonia Cup in Germany. Peter Odemwingie scored our goal and we take Porto on Sunday, ahead of our Premier League opener against Liverpool next Sunday.

Ibrahim Afellay signed this week on a free transfer from Barcelona – our fourth player from that club now. The winger joins on a two year contract.

Andy Wilkinson has been given a contract by the club to the end of the year as he continues to recover from injury and look for a new club.

Summer Ins/Outs:

Philipp Wollscheid (D) nominal fee (Bayern Leverkusen)

In the Barclays Asia Trophy in Singapore we lost 5-4 on penalties to Everton. Most of our internationals did not feature and Shawcross was absent through a back injury.

Ollie Shenton had a good game as did new goalie Jacob Haugaard. Very makeshift defence with Teixeira featuring and Steve Sidwell was captain for the game.

Haugaard; Bardsley, Cameron, Muniesa (Wilson 61), Teixeira; Sidwell (c), Shenton (Walters 71); Odemwingie (van Ginkel 61), Ireland, Arnautovic (Adam 46); Joselu (Crouch 61). Subs: Given, Whelan, Johnson, Diouf, Moha

Another new face and signing is Moha El Ouriachi who we have signed from our new feeder club Barcelona 😉 He featured on the bench in today’s game.

Asmir Begovic finally completed his move to Chelsea in an £8m deal.

Farewell Palacios!

Stoke City have announced their retained list and the the first team players leaving are Thomas Sorensen, Wilson Palacios and Andy Wilkinson. Andy Wilkinson has been at the club since 2001, one of our longest serving players of recent times.

Peter Odemwingie is retained by the club although a new contract has yet to be announced. He has been injured for much of the season, although hopefully he will be offered at least a one year contract.

Transfer rumours are linking us with all sorts of players including Barcelona’s Dutch international Ibrahim Afellay and Konoplianka.

Outgoing looks as though Robert Huth will complete a £3m transfer to Leicester City possibly next week. Peter Crouch is being linked with West Brom and former Stoke boss Tony Pulis. That could well happen, although long term Pulis target Carlton Cole has just been released by West Ham.

Bojan Krkic joins Stoke

Spanish international striker Bojan Krkic has joined Stoke City from Barcelona on four-year deal. What a great deal! Yes he may have lost his way but we like a player like that at Stoke. He joins his new team mates at the German training camp this week.

Now wonder if we will sign Assaidi? It did look a done deal but the latest rumours seem to suggest a stalling point has been over wages. One things for sure I think we will see a few departures, along with Wilson Palacios and Cameron Jerome, I’d say Charlie Adam, Ryan Shotton and Jamie Ness could all leave.

Stoke sign Spanish U21 defender Marc Muniesa

Spanish U21 defender Marc Muniesa has signed on a free transfer from Barcelona. He was a member of the Spain squad that recently won the European Under-21 Championship and has signed a four-year contract. Wow! Didn’t see that one coming and good to see we are (finally) exploiting the European market. I like the fact on Sky Sports News he was told Stoke play very similar to Barcelona 🙂

Well done to the Stoke Facebook groups Stoke Loud & Proud and Fortress Britannia who spotted this player at Clayton Woods earlier today. He was the mystery player alluded to in today’s earlier post.

* Glyn Hodges has been appointed the U21 coach at Stoke.

* Former Stokie on the move as Tom Soares signed a two year deal with Bury.
