Bardsley joins Burnley

Another day, another player leaving Stoke as Phil Bardsley joins Burnley for a fee of £750k, possibly rising to £1.5m. He will link up with fellow ex-Stoke player Jon Walters and possibly Shay Given, who Burnley may sign as their third choice keeper for the new season. Mark Hughes has been impressed with Tom Edwards in pre-season so far, hence allowing Bardsley to leave (although shame we couldn’t have let Glen Johnson go as he if off the pace and prone to injury)).

The club’s strategy of having fewer senior players and allowing more youngsters to play in the first team seems to be gathering pace. Just hope we do sign a few players with experience, notably in defence and another forward as we are lacking goal scoring power – not an easy thing to find unless a club is willing to spend silly amounts of money.

Stoke lost 2-1 at Sheff Utd last night in their latest pre-season friendly with Xherdan Shaqiri scoring Stoke’s goal.

Jon Walters has left Stoke City to join Burnley in a deal worth up to £3m. He joined us in 2010 from Ipswich Town, making 271 appearances for Stoke and scored 62 goals.

Former player Pete Skapetis is currently having a trial at Slough Town. The Australian youth international joined us from QPR, however he was plagued by injury and left for Dover Athletic. Jermaine Pennant has join Hibs on a trial and scored! He was previously at Bury.

Wolfsburg have signed Philipp Wollscheid on a season long loan from Stoke with an option to buy. No incoming defender as yet although Porto’s Bruno Martins Indi will be signing shortly on loan, paperwork and international permits are apparently being processed and he’s had his medical.

Meanwhile, Stoke have turned down offers for Charlie Adam from Burnley and Hull. Do hope Adam stays as a great impact sub, although of course the player himself my prefer regular starts.

Stoke City transfer news

Weekend press reports have Stoke in pole position to sign West Brom striker Saido Berahino. If true, he could sign this week ahead of the players returning for pre-season training next week. One target we won’t be signing is Norwich’s Nathan Redmond who signed for manager-less Southampton.

One player heavily linked with a move away is Charlie Adam who is wanted by newly promoted Burnley and a move that could appeal to Adam as he would be guaranteed more starts.

Stoke City 1-2 Burnley

To quote a Stoke fan of the Oatckake no long er Fortress Britannia, now it’s more Sandcastle Britannia. Losing at home to bottom club Burnley will hopefully act as a defensive wake-up call as we have often been woeful at the back with players switching off at key moments. Of the current bottom five teams, we have played all five and picked up just two points, losing at home to three of them – Villa, Leicester and now Burnley. Next up Liverpool away…

Still ever the optimist Bojan played well again and Walters is now our top scoring Premier League player of all time with 29 goals.

Phil Bardsley signs for Stoke

Yes that’s right we’ve signed a player before the end of May! Sunderland right back Phil Bardsley today signed a three year contract after leaving Sunderland after six and half years. He officially joins the club on July 1st.

Meanwhile striker Mama Diouf has left Hanover and has also been at Stoke today to discuss terms. Mark Hughes has tried to sign him in January. No further news but be good if Stoke get in quick and sign him on pre-contract terms.

Michael Kightly is still wanted by Burnley although the two clubs have yet to agree a fee.

Brek Shea seems to be staying at Stoke for now although a move back to the US could still happen over the summer.
