Adam, Fletcher and Haugaard all leave Stoke

Charlie Adam, Darren Fletcher and Jacob Haugaard will all leave the club this summer when their contracts expire. Shame regarding Adam as he would have made a decent coach, although he is keen still to play regular football which he wouldn’t get at Stoke.

Fletcher was a free transfer signing from West Brom two seasons ago and although another good character like Adam to have in a team, he never really shone for us and was probably past his best footballing wise. Haugaard is a goalkeeper only a goalkeeping coach could love as he never instilled confidence when between the sticks!

Former player Gareth Owen has been named as the new head of Stoke’s academy which does seem to be producing some exciting young players for us like Tom Edwards, Nathan Collins and Tyresse Campbell.

Stoke get that winning feeling again as Didcot draw away

Stoke went back to winning ways away at Blackburn and scored a goal – a great strike by Peter Etebo! Bojan missed a penalty, so we’ve only put away three out of the last thirteen penalties. That makes it nine games undefeated now with Swansea away tomorrow evening. Both Tom Ince and Ryan Shawcross are likely to be missing due to injury.

Congratulations to Tyrese Campbell, currently on loan at Shrewsbury Town, who won the EFL’s Young Player of the Month award for February.

Didcot Town drew one all away at Kempston Rovers, which given the team changes (player manager Andy Ballard and Adam Leyroad were serving the first of their two match bans), was a decent away point and they still remain in the final play-off spot. Kidlington at home this weekend is a ‘must win’ to help secure a play-off place.

Louis Moult & summer clear out

Former player Louis Moult has given a frank interview about his binge drinking in his teenage years and coping with the loss of his mum. It is a remarkably honest interview and highlights that men really should open up more about their feelings, not bottling them up which will always have some effect later on in life.

“But I’ve learned that talking about stuff is the only way. There was a time when, at this point in the conversation, I would be crying. But I’m not.”

In other Stoke City new academy director Gareth Jennings is leaving the club to take up a role with FIFA. Manager Nathan Jones seems one to introduce youngsters to the first team with Tom Edwards now a regular starter and Thibaud Verlinden started his first senior game against Reading last weekend.

Although the current season hasn’t ended yet, Nathan Jones has stated it will be an important summer not only in changing the squad around, but also getting them match fit. In recent years some of our players have looked woefully unfit at times, a far cry from the ‘Pulis fit’ days.

Of the out of contract players Darren Fletcher will surely leave the club and he has been popping up a lot as a football pundit for the BBC. Before Jones arrived Charlie Adam looked certain to leave, however now he is now getting games and fitting in well in the Jones ‘diamond’ midfield. He could be offered a new deal, unless a player coach role comes up in Scotland.

The biggest headache is what to do with the returning loanees like Imbula and Ndiaye, both on long and expensive contracts. Plus we have the defensive wonder Kevin Wimmer to come back, deep joy! Season long loans may be the best option, however it is the wages that will hinder moving these players on.

Jack Butland and Joe Allen could both leave as the club looks to cash in plus both stated they would stay last summer to help the club gain promotion, however as this hasn’t happened they may now look for a move to a Premier League club.

Danny Batth signs for Stoke

Stoke have signed defender Danny Batth from Wolves for an undisclosed fee on a three and a half years contract. Batth had been on loan at Middlesboro this season, a team manager by former Stoke boss Tony Pulis.

He may not be the only centre back joining as we have been linked with moves for Portsmouth’s Matt Clarke and Luton Town’s Justin James. Although we have an agreement with Luton that we won’t bid on any of their players this season, we can join in a bidding process once another makes an offer for a Luton player we are interested in. In this case Aston Villa are rumoured to be lining up a bid for Justin James.

Up front we are being linked with a move for Burnley’s Sam Vokes and Charlie Austin from Southampton.

The club have also said they will listen to offers for Peter Crouch and Darren Fletcher, both of whom are out of contract this summer and in Flecther’s case he has yet to play under new manager Nathan Jones. Wages will be the big issue in moving either player on from the club.

Ryan Sweeney has left Stoke signing for Mansfield Town on a free transfer. He has been on loan at Mansfield since the start of the season.

Paul Hart new assistant manager at Stoke City

Posted in Championship, Football, News, Stoke City, Stoke City FC with tags , , , , , , , on January 18, 2019 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Former Notts Forest and Portsmouth manager Paul Hart has been announced as assistant manager for Nathan Jones. Hart previously held the number 2 role when Nathan Jones was manager at Luton Town.

Leeds Utd at home tomorrow will be a very tough game after Tuesday’s 3-2 FA Cup defeat to Shrewsbury Town. If we keep the goals conceded down to five we’ll be doing well! Nathan Jones and his team have a massive rebuilding job ahead of them, not only in players confidence but also reshaping the squad and the defence which needs a major overhaul. Both Tyrese Campbell (so good to see him score on his full senior debut and his dad, former Everton and Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell was suitably proud on Twitter) and Charlie Adam will be pushing for a start after being the only two players to emerge with any credit from Tuesday’s game.

Match of the Week – Brentford v Stoke City

After last week’s lucky draw for Stoke away at Shrewsbury, Gary Rowett has been sacked and now we have a new manager Nathan Jones from Luton Town. He promises attacking football and has done well at Luton taking them up from League Two into current a play-off position in League One. Exciting and interesting times at Stoke for sure.

Brentford have drawn their last three games and have fallen away since their previous manager Dean Smith joined Aston Villa. Should be a good game, with Ryan Woods set to start against his old club and possibly a return to the squad for Bojan and Moritz Baeur? Tyrese Campbell must also be in with a shout of at least making the bench. Be interesting to see how the defence lines-up, with Martins Indi getting the nod ahead of Williams?
