Stoke City bring in six

Stoke City manager Nathan Jones wanted the majority of the new signings in before pre-season started and he got his wish with six players joining last week. Five were out of contract players, of which Nick Powell and Lee Gregory look sound business, plus former Burnley defender Stephen Ward signed on a one year contract is another good piece of business. Former QPR and Charlton midfielder Jordan Cousins has worked with Jones previously and could prove to a be a shrewd signing, with him earmarked for the base of Jones’s prefered midfield diamond shape.

Stoke still expect to sign two or three more players, although the emphasis will be on shifting out players, as bar the released ones below, none have left the club yet. Charlie Adam is training with Blackburn as he looks for a new club this summer.

Confirmed INS –

Jordan Cousins (QPR) – free

Ben Davies (Barnsley) – free

Lee Gregory (Millwall) – free

Liam Lindsay (Barnsley) – £2m

Nick Powell (Wigan) – free

Stephen Ward (Burnley) – free

Confirmed OUTS –

Charlie Adam, Darren Fletcher, Jacob Haugaard – all released at the end of their contracts

Ashley Williams – loan ended, out of contract at Everton

Stoke linked with Liam Lindsay & Butland off to Villa?

Stoke look set to sign Barnsley defender Liam Lindsay for a fee of around £2m according to Sky Sports News. Another linked player is former QPR midfielder Jordan Cousins, who manager Nathan Jones knows from his days at Charlton as their under-21s coach. Cousins would be available on a free after being released by QPR.

Aston Villa are now heavily linked with signing Jack Butland for around £20m and it may happen as soon as this week. Stoke have at least ten players they will be keen to move on in this summer’s transfer window.

Still no official news on signings although it does appear Nick Powell, Lee Gregory & Ben Davies have all signed for the club. They have not been announced yet and would presumably be announced before the players are back for pre-season that starts on June 28th.

In Didcot Town news Morgan Williams has left the club after two seasons and re-joined North Leigh.

Two leave Didcot Town and still no new faces at Stoke

Striker Felipe Barcelos has left Didcot Town to join Thatcham Town, mainly due to the travelling he has to do for games. He will be a big loss as he is a regular goalscorer and a crowd favourite. Also leaving is defender Sam Barder who is also joining Thatcham.

Meanhwile, over at Stoke City no new signings or departures yet. It does appear goalkeeper Ben Davies and striker Lee Gregory have both signed, although they have yet to be officially announced. Our first signings are normally announced on July 1, although hopefully we will announce some signings before then.

Stoke are being linked with a loan move for Everton defender Matthew Pennington who was at Ipswich Town last season on loan. It looks like James Justin is set to sign for Leicester City. The Luton Town left back is one of Jones’s top transfer targets.

Adam, Fletcher and Haugaard all leave Stoke

Charlie Adam, Darren Fletcher and Jacob Haugaard will all leave the club this summer when their contracts expire. Shame regarding Adam as he would have made a decent coach, although he is keen still to play regular football which he wouldn’t get at Stoke.

Fletcher was a free transfer signing from West Brom two seasons ago and although another good character like Adam to have in a team, he never really shone for us and was probably past his best footballing wise. Haugaard is a goalkeeper only a goalkeeping coach could love as he never instilled confidence when between the sticks!

Former player Gareth Owen has been named as the new head of Stoke’s academy which does seem to be producing some exciting young players for us like Tom Edwards, Nathan Collins and Tyresse Campbell.

Stoke get that winning feeling again as Didcot draw away

Stoke went back to winning ways away at Blackburn and scored a goal – a great strike by Peter Etebo! Bojan missed a penalty, so we’ve only put away three out of the last thirteen penalties. That makes it nine games undefeated now with Swansea away tomorrow evening. Both Tom Ince and Ryan Shawcross are likely to be missing due to injury.

Congratulations to Tyrese Campbell, currently on loan at Shrewsbury Town, who won the EFL’s Young Player of the Month award for February.

Didcot Town drew one all away at Kempston Rovers, which given the team changes (player manager Andy Ballard and Adam Leyroad were serving the first of their two match bans), was a decent away point and they still remain in the final play-off spot. Kidlington at home this weekend is a ‘must win’ to help secure a play-off place.

Louis Moult & summer clear out

Former player Louis Moult has given a frank interview about his binge drinking in his teenage years and coping with the loss of his mum. It is a remarkably honest interview and highlights that men really should open up more about their feelings, not bottling them up which will always have some effect later on in life.

“But I’ve learned that talking about stuff is the only way. There was a time when, at this point in the conversation, I would be crying. But I’m not.”

In other Stoke City new academy director Gareth Jennings is leaving the club to take up a role with FIFA. Manager Nathan Jones seems one to introduce youngsters to the first team with Tom Edwards now a regular starter and Thibaud Verlinden started his first senior game against Reading last weekend.

Although the current season hasn’t ended yet, Nathan Jones has stated it will be an important summer not only in changing the squad around, but also getting them match fit. In recent years some of our players have looked woefully unfit at times, a far cry from the ‘Pulis fit’ days.

Of the out of contract players Darren Fletcher will surely leave the club and he has been popping up a lot as a football pundit for the BBC. Before Jones arrived Charlie Adam looked certain to leave, however now he is now getting games and fitting in well in the Jones ‘diamond’ midfield. He could be offered a new deal, unless a player coach role comes up in Scotland.

The biggest headache is what to do with the returning loanees like Imbula and Ndiaye, both on long and expensive contracts. Plus we have the defensive wonder Kevin Wimmer to come back, deep joy! Season long loans may be the best option, however it is the wages that will hinder moving these players on.

Jack Butland and Joe Allen could both leave as the club looks to cash in plus both stated they would stay last summer to help the club gain promotion, however as this hasn’t happened they may now look for a move to a Premier League club.
