Stoke City summer transfers 2019

Posted in Championship, Football, football transfers, Stoke City FC with tags , , , , , , , , , on May 7, 2019 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

I will aim to include the confirmed transfers and rumours – based on reliable as possible sources.

Confirmed INS –

Confirmed OUTS –

Charlie Adam, Darren Fletcher, Jacob Haugaard – all released at the end of their contracts

Ashley Williams – loan ended, out of contract at Everton

Rumoured OUTS
Jack Butland to Bournemouth with former keeper Asmir Begovic coming back to Stoke as part of any deal; Butland has also been linked with a move to Crystal Palace

Moritz Bauer – linked with a number of clubs, most likely to be loaned out next season.

Bojan – the Sentinel ran a story saying Bojan was told to look for another club, which led to the club issuing an update on the club’s website stating Bojan would only leave if a suitable offer came in. Whatever way you read it don’t expect him to be in the squad come the first game of the season.

Joe Allen has been linked with a move to Wolves

Eric Pieters has a year left on his contract and will either leave the club on a permanent deal or another loan this summer, as he does not feature in the manager’s plans.

Kevin Wimmer and Imbula will be shipped out if the club can find any takers, whilst Badou Ndiaye is one returning loanee Nathan Jones may give another chance to impress, although the player may want a move away from Stoke regardless.

Nathan Collins the young defender has been linked with a move to Man Utd, which will be a blow if it happens as he looks an exciting prospect.

Rumoured INS…

Adam Davies (Barnsley) – out of contract and seen as a replacement for Butland (Sentinel)

Lee Gregory – striker out of contract at Millwall and linked with a free transfer move to Stoke by ‘The Sun’ and ‘The Sentinel’. BBC Radio Stoke on Monday 20 May reporting that a medical and terms have been agreed.

Matt Ritchie (Newcastle) – former manager Gary Rowett tried to sign him last summer but failed and it seems Stoke are keen to try again, tempting the player with a long contract.

Nick Powell (Wigan) – former Man Utd player and one Nathan Jones is planning to land on a free as he is currently out of contract at Wigan. (Sentinel)

Adam, Fletcher and Haugaard all leave Stoke

Charlie Adam, Darren Fletcher and Jacob Haugaard will all leave the club this summer when their contracts expire. Shame regarding Adam as he would have made a decent coach, although he is keen still to play regular football which he wouldn’t get at Stoke.

Fletcher was a free transfer signing from West Brom two seasons ago and although another good character like Adam to have in a team, he never really shone for us and was probably past his best footballing wise. Haugaard is a goalkeeper only a goalkeeping coach could love as he never instilled confidence when between the sticks!

Former player Gareth Owen has been named as the new head of Stoke’s academy which does seem to be producing some exciting young players for us like Tom Edwards, Nathan Collins and Tyresse Campbell.

Louis Moult & summer clear out

Former player Louis Moult has given a frank interview about his binge drinking in his teenage years and coping with the loss of his mum. It is a remarkably honest interview and highlights that men really should open up more about their feelings, not bottling them up which will always have some effect later on in life.

“But I’ve learned that talking about stuff is the only way. There was a time when, at this point in the conversation, I would be crying. But I’m not.”

In other Stoke City new academy director Gareth Jennings is leaving the club to take up a role with FIFA. Manager Nathan Jones seems one to introduce youngsters to the first team with Tom Edwards now a regular starter and Thibaud Verlinden started his first senior game against Reading last weekend.

Although the current season hasn’t ended yet, Nathan Jones has stated it will be an important summer not only in changing the squad around, but also getting them match fit. In recent years some of our players have looked woefully unfit at times, a far cry from the ‘Pulis fit’ days.

Of the out of contract players Darren Fletcher will surely leave the club and he has been popping up a lot as a football pundit for the BBC. Before Jones arrived Charlie Adam looked certain to leave, however now he is now getting games and fitting in well in the Jones ‘diamond’ midfield. He could be offered a new deal, unless a player coach role comes up in Scotland.

The biggest headache is what to do with the returning loanees like Imbula and Ndiaye, both on long and expensive contracts. Plus we have the defensive wonder Kevin Wimmer to come back, deep joy! Season long loans may be the best option, however it is the wages that will hinder moving these players on.

Jack Butland and Joe Allen could both leave as the club looks to cash in plus both stated they would stay last summer to help the club gain promotion, however as this hasn’t happened they may now look for a move to a Premier League club.

Match of the week – Shrewsbury Town v Stoke City – Gary Rowett on his way?

Posted in Championship, FA Cup, Football, football transfers, Stoke City, Stoke City FC with tags , , , , , , , on January 3, 2019 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

The Mirror broke a story last night that Gary Rowett was facing the sack and either Sam Allardyce or David Moyes were being lined-up to replace him. It may seem strange to an outsider as Stoke are currently fourteenth in the Championship and still within reach of a play-off place, however the fans have made their voices heard at the past couple of games, including the dismal 2-0 defeat at home to Bristol City on New Year’s Day. The football played under Rowett is defensive first and flair players like Bojan don’t even get a look in and Moritz Bauer, who seems to have upset Rowett as he also doesn’t make the match day squad.

League One Shrewsbury Town away in the FA Cup third round is a tricky tie. Rowett will be in charge still it seems, however if he does play the youngsters and Bojan & Bauer and they win, he will have fans saying ‘told you so’ and upping the pressure to play them in league games. I am going for a 2-1 win for Stoke.

Charlie Adam has stated he’s be happy to move to Rangers, although whether Rangers would be happy to see him is another matter! He has also been linked with a move to Dundee.

Charlie Adam and Kevin Kitson

Posted in Football, News, Stoke City FC with tags , , , , , on October 11, 2018 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Charlie Adam talks about his dad’s suicide in 2012 on World Mental Health Day yesterday (10 October).

Also former player Dave Kitson was recalling how he attacked manager Tony Pulis with a pair of scissors! Kitson is thought to be the person behind the Secret Footballer. Kitson never settled at Stoke and was certainly not the prolific goalscorer we thought we had signed based on his Reading career.

Four can leave the club

Posted in Football, football transfers, News, Stoke City FC with tags , , , , , , , , on August 13, 2018 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Manager Gary Rowett has said four players – Imbula, Charlie Adam (who has been ruffling feathers with his radio punditry), Maxim Choupo-Moting and Geoff Cameron – are all surplus to requirements and available before this month’s EFL deadline. Imbula is likely to be a loan again and of the four Geoff Cameron looks the likeliest to leave first with firm interest from a couple of European clubs.

Stoke will look to get a few players on loan, either as season long ones or loan to buy where we loan a player and pay the agreed transfer fee in January (like Benik Afobe). Makes bit of a nonsense about the transfer window closing on August 9th though.

Crouch signs one year contract extension

Posted in Football, football transfers, Stoke City FC, The Premiership with tags , , , , , , , , on December 1, 2017 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Peter Crouch has signed a one year extension to his current contract taking him up to 2019 at the club. At 36 he still has a few years and goals in him and one of the best Stoke signings in recent years.

January we could see Charlie Adam and Glen Johnson shown the door, whilst Stephen Ireland, who’s current short term deal finishes in January, could also leave after being offered a reduced terms contract until next summer. Lets hope Johnson goes absolute waste signing him for another year as he is way past his best.
