Dean Whitehead retires and Lambert’s future in the balance

Dean Whitehead has announced he is retiring from playing at the age of 36. Whitehead played 158 times for Stoke between 2009 and 2013, will next season manage the under-17’s at his current club Huddersfield.

Darren Fletcher has said he would be up for staying at Stoke next season, although that will depend on who is in charge as he has not featured much under Paul Lambert. He has one year left of a two year contract he signed when joined a free transfer last summer.

Lambert will learn his fate after our final game of this season away at Swansea. Personally I hope we part ways with him as despite shoring up the defence, his record of one win since he joined in January is very poor and he doesn’t inspire me to think we can be in a chance of promotion if he stays. The Daily Telegraph broke the story that there was a clause in Lambert’s contract where either he or the club could walks away from the contract after this season finished. Mixed messages from the club as to whether he is staying and don’t be surprised if he is given a chance by the club to lead Stoke in the Championship next season. Graham Potter, a former player who was interested in the job in January, is a leading contender for the Swansea job.

Whelan wanted & Shaqiri off?

Bar the signing of Darren Fletcher on a free from West Brom, it has been a quiet start to the summer transfer season for Stoke – although the transfer window doesn’t officially open until July 1.

Glen Whelan has had an offer from Aston Villa turned down by the club and now Derby County are interested in signing him. It does look as though come the new season he will be playing for a new club.

Shaqiri is being linked again with a move to Roma – hope he does stay a Stoke player next season. Imbula could be off to Nice on loan as Stoke look to offload our flop record signing. Joselu could be off to Malaga on a permanent move, another Hughes signing who failed to impress.

One former Stoke player we could see at the Bet365 stadium next season is Dean Whitehead, who has been offered a new contract by newly promoted Huddersfield Town, where he has been for the past two seasons.

Adam, Moses and Whitehead

Charlie Adam has signed a new extended contract with the club until 2017, with an option of a further year. Great news as his form since becoming a regular in the starting XI following Bojan’s injury was immense. Speaking of Bojan he is aiming to be back in contention for the opening game of the season against Liverpool.

One player who looks like won’t be signing is Victor Moses if this Guardian news piece is to be believed. Seems he is not keen to be any part of a deal to take Begovic to Chelsea. No formal offers have been made for Begovic yet.

Andy Wilkinson is on a week-by-week contract with the club until he finds himself a new club after being released this summer.

Ex-Stoke player Dean Whitehead has moved clubs again signing for Huddersfield Town.

Dean Whitehead signs for Middlesborough

Dean Whitehead has signed for Middlesboro after being released by Stoke. A great servant for the club and model professional, albeit one who like to keep the referee busy. Who will we have now to guess the time Whitehead would be yellow carded in a game?

Glyn Hodges has left QPR as a coach to join up again with Mark Hughes at Stoke.

Rumours have us linked with Burnley striker Charlie Austin and Leeds Utd’s Sam Byram. The latter possible seen at Clayton Woods today for a medical according to Stoke Loud & Proud, one of the Stoke City Facebook pages.

West Brom 0-1 Stoke City

Our first away win of the season and another West Brom who we have a good record against. Dean Whitehead got our winner, a rare goal from him as Jones started instead of Crouch, plus Edu made the bench as Cameron Jerome injured himself in warm-up. Three wins on the trot and above Arsenal not to bad at all!

Reading 1-1 Stoke City

Not a great game by all accounts but debutant Michael Kightly scored before a late Reading penalty after Dean Whitehead was sent off for his second bookable offence. Good away point and at least we have scored this season! Otherwise not many positives from this game…

Michael Owen could join us soon based on Tweets between Owen and Gary Linekar. Need something else up front as Big Mama is sadly not going to feature after his series of injuries and Kenwyne Jones I am sure will be off before deadline day. Matthew Upson maybe off as well as he didn’t travel with the squad today.

Lewis Moult has signed for Northampton and Tom Soares looks set to sign a one moth deal with Portsmouth.

Stoke City 1-0 Norwich

Another vital three points and good to see Etherington on the score sheet again. Dean Whitehead was on fine form and good to see Ryan Shotton getting a regular run out in the team

Next up Chelsea who could be managerless by the time we face them next weekend after they lost one nil at West Brom today…
