STEELEYE SPAN UK tour dates

Posted in Folk, Folk rock, gigs, News with tags , , , , , , on September 21, 2018 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Tonight’s performance is the best I’ve seen from the band in several years. Let’s hope the current line-up will be around for a whileThe Stinger – Darren Johnson

Steeleye Span are fast approaching their 50th anniversary 2019, with a work rate to put many younger artists to shame.  The bands’ eighth album in twelve years – 2016’s Dodgy Bastards – saw them return to the folk tales and characters that have always been at the heart of the Steeleye sound.  Dodgy Bastards saw the folk-rock pioneers continue drawing stories of murder, religion, incest, skulls, honour killings and tormented spirit.  They once more create an inspired and dark take on the music of the British Isles.

Steeleye Span are an English Folk Rock band formed in 1969. Still active today, along with Fairport Convention they are amongst the best known acts of the British Folk Revival and were among the most commercially successful, thanks to their hit singles Gaudette” and “All Around My Hat”. They had four Top 40 albums and achieved a certified gold record with sales of “All Around My Hat”.

The present Steeleye line-up is:  The Legendary Maddy Prior (vocals), with long term member Liam Genockey(drums), Julian Littman (guitar/keyboards and vocals)Andrew Sinclair (guitar), Jesse Mae Smart (violin and backing vocals), Benji Kirkpatrick (guitar and backing vocals), (whose father John Kirkpatrick played with the band in 1977-1978) and Roger Carey (bass)

Steeleye are working on their new studio album for their 2019, 50th Celebration,  some of the new tracks will feature in the set list for the up and coming UK tour.

“STEELEYE Span cross the folk rock divide like no other act in the UK”. Andrew Riley (Quay News.net).

RUNRIG say their studio farewell in 2016

Posted in Folk, Folk rock, Music for 2015 with tags , , , , , on December 2, 2015 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

RUNRIG CELEBRATE THEIR FINAL STUDIO ALBUM “THE STORY”
NATIONWIDE SCOTTISH/UK TOUR STARTING 10 FEBRUARY 2016

RUNRIG release The Story – their 14th and final studio album on Friday 29 January, 2016.  The 11-track album brings the curtain down on a remarkable and unique recording career.  The new album will be released on Deluxe CD format that comes with an exclusive 32-page booklet, a 2-disc gatefold vinyl with bonus track (The Story – radio edit), and digital download. The band will support the new album with a 14-date Scottish/UK tour that starts at the Aberdeen Music Hall on Wednesday 10 February.  Visit the official UK web release page here: http://bit.ly/1Ni4oQf.

Scottish shows can be booked online from ticketmaster.co.uk or from the 24 hour box office: 0844 844 0444. UK shows can be booked online from bookingsdirect.com or from the 24 hour box office: 0844 338 000. The title track, The Story, is accompanied with the official  music video – a powerful uplifting short film about one man’s relationship with his culture and with his past, and the hold these memories still have over his life and the stories inside all of us.

Having celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2013, Runrig have taken the decision to embark on one final creative journey into the studio. The result is The Story; an album of emotional resonance and reflection, placing at its heart, a narrative that is very much part of the band itself. “This is the band’s last studio recording, a hugely significant milestone for us all and one that we really want to celebrate,” says Rory McDonald, Runrig’s bass guitarist, backing vocalist and one of their original founding members.

“One of the highlights of the album was being able to go to Prague to record the 32- piece Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, says Brian Hurrren, who produced the new album and plays keyboards, accordion and sings backing vocals. “It was an incredible experience and it really helped to bring out the emotion in the songs.”  Adds original founding member, percussionist and songwriter Calum MacDonald – “There are many stories on the album but none more so than that of the band itself. It’s fair to say that a number of the songs have a definite reflective quality.”

Bellowhead call it a day :(

Posted in Folk, Folk rock, Music for 2015, News with tags , , , , on June 3, 2015 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Sadly Bellowhead are calling it a day with a farewell tour this year and in 2016.

They have announced:

‘This is a sad message to send but after 11 amazing years we’ve decided to call it a day.

It’s been an incredible journey for us all and we’ve loved every minute of being Bellowhead but Jon has decided the time has come for him to stand down as lead singer and the rest of us don’t feel that we wish to continue without him. We have therefore decided that we should give Bellowhead the send off it deserves and go out with a bang.

So we will be performing a two-part farewell tour (in November 2015 and April 2016) finishing as we started all those years back, with an intimate gig at Oxford Town Hall (on May Day 2016) – the very first venue we ever played as a band.

The tour dates will be announced in full on Friday June 5th and tickets will go on general sale on Friday 12th June.  Mailing list members will be given the chance to pre-order on Wednesday  10th.

We are all looking forward to the remaining gigs and intend to make them our best shows yet so we hope you can come along for the party.

We hope you will not be too upset with us for calling time on the band. Of course Bellowhead would have been nothing without the support of our amazing fans over the last decade.  We are all incredibly grateful to you for coming with us on this journey and want to thank you all for being part of the Bellowhead story.

Love
