Stoke City injury update

After a lacklustre game against Bournemouth we really need to get back to basics for the Watford game. Whelan should be fit by the weekend, possibly on the bench? Bardsley went off injured and no date as yet on his likely return.

Better news with Butland due back early next month and Aflley has returned to training.

The club are looking to sign keeper Lee Grant in January as his current loan expires then. He has proved a real success since taking over from Shay Given.

Other transfer rumours include a possible bid for Port Vale’s defender Nathan Smith. Unlikely though as we don’t do much business with the Vale!

WHELAN and SOBHI

Glen Whelan has agreed a one year contract extension which sees him at the club now until the summer of 2018. Good to get him committed to the club as one of our longest serving players, and along with Walters a good character to have in your team on and off the field.

We are closing in on our first summer signing, rising Egyptian star Ramadan Sobhi. All subject to work permits which has scuppered a few of our signings in the past. Sign him now Mr Hughes!

Stoke draw with Man Utd, Pulis and Shotton away!

Stoke drew with Man Utd today 1-1 with an early Ryan Shawcross goal and a disallowed Stoke penalty. Man Utd had more long balls than us yet their manager thinks we’re a long ball team! That’s seven points from nine over the festive season, a very good points haul. Next up non-league Wrexham at home in the third round of the FA Cup. Have to be careful as they are doing well this season and we have a so-so record against non-league/lower league sides. I am not going to even mention by name that north eastern non-league club who beat us in the 1970’s, a case where I can sadly say I was there…

Former manager Tony Pulis has joined West Brom as their new manager. Good luck to him and hands off Glen Whelan and Jon Walters!

Ryan Shotton has joined Derby County on a permanent deal after being on loan with them since the summer. A local player he made over 70 appearances for us and good luck to him. With the January transfer window now open we may see Brek Shea leave and possibly Andy Wilkinson join Millwall permanently.

Contracts wise rumour is Glen Whelan has been offered an improved contract and a new contract has been offered to Peter Odemwingie, who is currently out injured until June. No news on a new deal for Peter Crouch as yet.

Liverpool 1-0 Stoke City

We did well, bossing the game in the first half before Liverpool started coming back into the game in the second half and grabbed the points with a late winner. We deserved at least a point. Much more worrying was another injured player, this time Steve Sidwell. No timescale as yet to when he will be back and Glen Whelan also picked up a knock after subbing Sidwell! With Man Utd on Tuesday night looks like seventeen year old Ollie Shenton, who just signed a full professional contract, could possibly start in that game. He was on the subs bench for the Liverpool game.
