Transfer rumours: Owen to sign and Huth off?

Even before our retained list is published there are plenty of rumours on incomings and outgoings at what should be a busy summer for us.

Peter Coates was quickly off the mark suggesting Pulis may be keen on trying to sign Michael Owen aftrr he was released by Man Utd. Matthew Jarvis of Wolves you could also see being a Pulis target along with West Brom’s Paul Scharner.

Still no update on the Fuller situation, although Jermaine Pennant tweeted that he expects next season top be one of his best for Stoke.

Mr Huth keeps popping up on various football rumour sites with Spurs (in exchange for Defoe) and Everton supposedly interested. His future will depend on if he signs a contract extension, as with only a year left on his current deal the club would be keen to cash in on him now if he isn’t going to commit.

Finally, Danny Higginbotham is on the panel of Stoke Legends at BBC Five Live’s outside broadcast of ‘Fighting Talk’ this Saturday at the Britannia stadium. He is joined by Terry Conroy, Tony Dorigo and Stoke supporter cricketer Dominic Cork. Nick Hancock is the panel host before the live show and its regular presenter Colin Murray. There are live bands as well including the Enemy and Ash. Full details can be found here

Stoke City 2-1 Wolves

Despite going one nil down goals from Huth and Peter Crouch gave us three points and puts us past the 40 point safety mark, although this season I think 35 or 36 pts will be enough for safety. We do need a big summer clear out though and even players like Matthew Etherington may need to go if he has another season like this one. Mind you I’d take Matthew Jarvis of Wolves hands in a shot, a perfect Pulis player.

Stoke City 0-1 Sunderland

With Huth sent off at the stroke of half-time we inevitably lost, although the red card was a yellow at best. Played in driving snow didn’t help and not a great game by all accounts. Sunderland continue with their good start under Martin O’Neill.

Some Stoke fans are getting restless with our performances of late and given the lack of new signings in the January transfer window this doesn’t help either. But we they seem to forget are mid-table, in the Europa League knock out stages and the last sixteen of the FA Cup. Yes our play can be a bit one dimensional at time but we have to play to our strengths and getting another season of Premiership football is always the goal. I do think Delap needs dropping though as Palacios adds more calm into the midfield or even Whitehead who puts in a good shift. Onwards and upwards! Fulham away next…

Derby County 0-2 Stoke City FA Cup 4th Round

Goals from Jerome (who started up front with Crouch and Walters on the wing) and Huth saw us through to the last sixteen. We never really seemed troubled by Derby and another FA Cup away win.

No Upson on the bench fueling rumours he is off before Tuesday’s when the January transfer window closes. Fellow defenders Danny Higginbotham and Danny Collins could also depart. Maybe long term target Liam Ridgewell may join from Brum?

Gillingham 1-3 Stoke City FA Cup 3rd Round

Although Gillingham took the lead goals from Walters (will he ever get rested by Pulis?), Jerome and Huth saw us progress to the fourth round. Tony Pulis got a standing ovation before the game from all four corners of the ground after his successful stint managing Gillingham back in the 1990’s. Fulham away for me so I can see the game 🙂

Pulis is keen to agree new contracts with Higginbotham, Whelan, Huth and Delap although no mention of Fuller who is out of contract in the summer.
