Grant signs and Frank Soo book

Stoke have signed goalkeeper Lee Grant from Derby County on a permanent contract following a loan spell since last August. He has joined on a two and half year contract for a few of £1.3m.

We have three players at the African Cup of Nations this month – Bony, Diouf and Sobhi.Bony had been the subject of a possible move to China but he seems to be staying out to see his season long loan out and get back into the starting XI.

Not much else transfer wise bar the possibility of Peter Crouch and Ibrahim Afellay both being offered new deals as their current ones finish this summer. Quite a few players are out of contract this summer including Glen Johnson, Stephen Ireland, Charlie Adam, Phil Bardsley and Shay Given. Plus we’ve still got Dionatan Teixeira on our books until June!!!

Recently published is a biography of Stoke player Frank Soo called ‘The Wanderer’ by Susan Gardiner. You can see more here at https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wanderer-Story-Frank-Soo/dp/0995539618

More injury woes for Stoke

Posted in Football, Stoke City FC, The Premiership with tags , , , , on September 7, 2016 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Ibrahim Afelley looks set to be out longer than first thought and should be back in training within the next three months, he is back in January at present. Diouf is a possible miss from Saturday’s home game against Spurs and Shaqiri is likely to miss the game as well. However, Glen Johnson could be back in contention for the weekend’s game.

74 injuries and Tuncay is back!

An interesting article in the Sentinel showed we have had 74 injuries this season to date – compare that to just 18 for Champions in waiting Leicester. That is an enormous number and could go some way to explaining our inconsistent form this season, the latest being a disappointing 4-0 defeat away at Man City at the weekend. Another factor is the team performance, or more precisely the lack of team performance, as few players seem to be battling and working as a team on the pitch of late. Wollscheid hits the nail on the head in his interview here.

We need to finish our last three games with some of that old battling Stoke spirit as three more losses will carry on into next season and with a summer that could see Arnie leave, possibly followed by others like Crouch?

Afellay is out for what looks like the remainder of the year, so Mark Hughes will definitely need some summer signings as cover. Better news in that Marc Wilson played a behind closed doors friendly against Crewe as he continues his comeback from injury.

Tony Pulis and his current side West Brom all but dented Spurs title hopes last night and paved the way for Leicester to be crowned champions – in Pulis we trust 😉

Tuncay will be back at the Brit! He’s the latest player to be confirmed for Andy Wilkinson’s testimonial game on Monday 16 May at 7:45pm. Others set to feature include Mama Sidibe, Ricardo Fuller, James Beattie, Danny Higginbotham, Liam Lawrence, Mark Stein, Peter Crouch and Asmir Begovic.

Bournemouth 1-3 Stoke City

A great away win after three consecutive 3-0 defeats and no goals scored in the last four league games. Goals from Giannelli Imbula (his first for Stoke and only his second game fur us), Ibrahim Afellay and Joselu. We did however lose Muniesa and Glenn Johnson to injury with Teixeira on as a sub for Muniesa at HT. Hopefully with the international break a chance for the injured players to recover. We currently have three fit defenders after today’s game!

Great news in Bojan signing a new contract for another 4 1/2 years.

Stoke City 2-0 Man City

What a great result and performance by Stoke City. I was listening on the radio and Man City seemed dazed and confused. Good to see two assists by Xherdan Shaqiri, who is still desperate to get his first goal for us. Marko Arnautovic bagged both goals thanks to Shaqiri’s assists and good to see Afelay settling in more. We didn’t even have Diouf on the pitch and Walters only came on for the last ten minutes.

Stoke haven’t conceded a Premier League goal with Shawcross on the pitch this season.

FA Cup third round draw this evening, a home tie would be good.

A late winner denied us a decent start to the Colonia Cup in Germany. Peter Odemwingie scored our goal and we take Porto on Sunday, ahead of our Premier League opener against Liverpool next Sunday.

Ibrahim Afellay signed this week on a free transfer from Barcelona – our fourth player from that club now. The winger joins on a two year contract.

Andy Wilkinson has been given a contract by the club to the end of the year as he continues to recover from injury and look for a new club.

Stoke City have announced their retained list and the the first team players leaving are Thomas Sorensen, Wilson Palacios and Andy Wilkinson. Andy Wilkinson has been at the club since 2001, one of our longest serving players of recent times.

Peter Odemwingie is retained by the club although a new contract has yet to be announced. He has been injured for much of the season, although hopefully he will be offered at least a one year contract.

Transfer rumours are linking us with all sorts of players including Barcelona’s Dutch international Ibrahim Afellay and Konoplianka.

Outgoing looks as though Robert Huth will complete a £3m transfer to Leicester City possibly next week. Peter Crouch is being linked with West Brom and former Stoke boss Tony Pulis. That could well happen, although long term Pulis target Carlton Cole has just been released by West Ham.
