Shaqiri joins Liverpool

Shaqiri completed his transfer to Liverpool yesterday. He made it clear he wanted to have Champions League and Premiership football this season. A real pleasure to watch in a Stoke top and good luck at Liverpool.

Joe Allen set to join the Potters?

Despite Mark Hughes hinting in a recent interview this week could be quiet on the transfer front it appears we have had a fee agreed with Liverpool for Welsh international Joe Allen. Worth keeping an eye on John Percy’s Twitter as he often gets Stoke transfer news spot on. Great signing if we get him.

Still no update on the possible signing of West Brom’s Saido Berahino and whether a fee has been agreed.

Meanwhile former goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, who only left Stoke last summer, is set to leave Chelsea and possibly join Everton.

Sidwell off to the seaside…

Midfielder Steve Sidwell has signed with Brighton on loan for the rest of the season. He has only made four appearances for us this season, mainly in cup games. Sidwell is a decent player, just never really had a full run in the side and he is way down the pecking order now. Like fellow lost boy Stephen Ireland, he doesn’t even make the bench now. Good luck!

Ryan Shawcross picked up an injury at the weekend and it looks like we will be without him for up to a month. A big blow, especially with two big cup games this week – Liverpool tonight and Crystal Palace away on Saturday. We have cover although Marc Wilson never fills you with confidence and Muniesa is coming back from injury. Geoff Cameron is still doubtful, so maybe a lat minute transfer dash for a loanee centre back this week?

FC Koln 2-1 Stoke City

A late winner denied us a decent start to the Colonia Cup in Germany. Peter Odemwingie scored our goal and we take Porto on Sunday, ahead of our Premier League opener against Liverpool next Sunday.

Ibrahim Afellay signed this week on a free transfer from Barcelona – our fourth player from that club now. The winger joins on a two year contract.

Andy Wilkinson has been given a contract by the club to the end of the year as he continues to recover from injury and look for a new club.

Van Ginkel, Given and Johnson all join and Ness leaves

Stoke City have signed goalkeeper Shay Given on a free transfer after his release from Aston Villa. He joins on a two year contract and will be no.2 behind the new no.1 Jack Butland (assuming Begovic does join Chelsea!). Good signing given his experience and the age of our goalkeepers now, all of whom are under 26 years old.

We have also signed midfielder Marko van Ginkel from Chelsea on a season long loan (presumably part of the Begovic deal). This could be a steal of a signing, albeit on loan, given the potential he has.

Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has also signed on a free according to the Daily Mail and Sky Sports. Good cover for right back and I think he will be first choice ahead of Cameron and Bardsley.

Jamie Ness has left the club on a free transfer joining Scunthorpe. He had been on loan at Crewe last season and looked set to join on loan again. He’s never really featured at the club and was signed along with Maurice Edu (another recent flop) from Rangers by Pulis.

Steven N’Zonzi to Sevilla

Looks a done deal if N’Zonzi can agree terms with Sevilla who have had a £7m bid accepted by Stoke City. He will be a tough act to replace and I hope we don’t lose any more key players, bar Begovic who we always knew would be set to leave this summer.

Steve Sidwell has been linked with a possible move to Leeds Utd. He has never really made much impression since signing on a free last summer, despite playing well at most of his previous clubs.

Possible incoming players could include Glen Johnson released by Liverpool (who paid Portsmouth over £17m to sign him!) and former Aston Villa keeper Shay Given, although Middlesboro are confident of signing him.

Opening fixture of the new season is…Liverpool!

You couldn’t make it up as we start the 2016/17 Premier League season against Liverpool at home. Just in case you have forgotten we beat them 6-1 at home at the end of last season J Our first away fixture is Tottenham who we beat away in the same fixture last season. Our final away game is Crystal Palace and we finish the season with a home game against West Ham.

Opening day fixtures see Premiership newboys Bournemouth home to Aston Villa, their fans will like that one; Watford face a tricky trip to Everton and Norwich host Crystal Palace, not an easy fixture given how well Palace have done since Alan Pardew took over.
