Wilko testimonial and Butland injured

Posted in Football, News, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on March 29, 2016 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

First the band news, Jack Butland is out for three months with ankle ligament damage after coming off in the England friendly against Germany. A big blow to us and Butland who would have been in England’s Euro 2016 finals squad.

Andy Wilkinson has been given a testimonial game by the club after recently retiring due to a head injury. It takes place at the Britannia Stadium on Monday 16th May at 7pm. The list of ex-Stoke players lined-up is rather good including Mark Stein, Rory Delap, Ricardo Fuller, Abdoulaye Faye, Karl Henry, John Eustace, Peter Odemwingie, Carlo Nash, Salif Diao, Andy Griffin (no bitch slapping with Fuller please!), Steve Simeonson, Carl Dickinson, Danny Higginbotham, Mama Sidibe, James Beattie, Dean Whitehad (the return of the ‘What minute in the match will Deano be booked?’ sweepstake) and Matty Etherington.

That is some line-up and wonder if Tony Pulis will be involved, maybe managing one of the teams? Or Nello?

Matthew Etherington announces his retirement

Former player Matthew Etherington has announced his retirement due to reoccurring back injuries. He signed for us in 2009 and left in the summer after his contract ran out. He played 152 times for us scoring 13 goals, including a corker against Bolton in the 5-0 demolition of them in the 2011 FA Cup semi-final at Wembley. Great player for Stoke, good luck Matty!

He tweeted:   “Due to an ongoing back problem, the day has come for me to retire from professional football. I have some amazing memories since the day I made my debut at just 15 years old.

“Thank you to all the great clubs I have played for and to the supporters. I have made some mistakes along the way but it has made me who I am today. I look at the past with pride and to the future with optimism.

“Thanks to everyone for the kind messages. Really overwhelming reading them all. Nice to know I left a few good memories during my career.”

West Brom 1-2 Stoke City

Ahh yes West Brom the club that never stops giving points to us! A Charlie Adam cracker secured the three points as we finished the season in ninth spot (our highest ever in the Premier League) and with 50 points (our highest total). I was dubious over appointing Mark Hughes as manager last summer but I am happy to be proved wrong. It’s been a great season for us and it will be an interesting summer as Hughes tries to bring in a few more players to suit his style of play and to look to better this season’s performance.

Sadly we won’t be seeing Juan Agudelo in a Stoke top after his second work permit appeal was turned down. Not sure what will happen with him now and perhaps a season long loan in Europe or Stoke cancel his contract.

Matthew Etherington has bid a fond farewell to the club after Sunday’s game and it looks as though Andy Wilkinson has signed a new contract, although nothing official has come out of the club yet. Thomas Sorenson has been offered a new one year contract.

Pre-season will be spent in Germany between 18th-30th July with three yet to be announced friendlies against German teams. Stoke then host Real Betis on Wednesday August 6th at the Britannia Stadium, along with away fixtures at Burton Albion and Blackburn Rovers in early August.

Three Stoke players should be featuring in the World Cup next month – Asmir Begovic (Bosnia), Geoff Cameron (USA) and Wilson Palacios (Honduras).

Stoke City 4-1 Fulham and Matty’s farewell

Bit of a romp really as the Hughes players led the attack today as Peter Crouch started on the bench. Odemwingie made it 1-0 at half time, then came goals in the second half from Arnautovic, Assaidi and Super Jonny Walters. Sadly the result meant Fulham were relegated after thirteen years in the top flight. Cardiff were also relegated, which was a better piece of news 🙂

The game also marked the final appearance of Matty Etherington who leaves the club in the summer. He came on as a sub and got a standing ovation from the fans and rightly so. A great player for the club and good luck to him in the future.

Any excuse to wheel out our 5-0 FA Cup semi-final demolition of Bolton with Etherington scoring the first goal>

Assaidi crocked and Butland off on loan again

OUSSAMA Assaidi has been ruled out of Stoke City’s trip to Manchester City after suffering knee ligament damage on a training camp in Dubai.

That’s a blow and a half as he injects some much needed pace into the side. Depending on the seriousness of the injury we may not see him again until April.
Better news with Matthew Etherington and Andy Wilkinson both expected to make the squad for Saturday.
Jack Butland is likely to join Leeds Utd on loan next week.

Matthew Etherington got the Stoke goal as we fielded a Polish trialist left back Sebastian Boenisch who played for nearly 70 minutes and could be signing for us on a free?

Get well Huth who Tony Pulis revealed at tonight’s game is in hospital with a virus.

Stoke drew 1-1 in their final game against Kansas in the US with Pulis keen to go back to the USA next summer. Geoff Cameron is training with the squad and has his work permit appeal this Wednesday (8th August).

Stoke play at Torquay Utd tonight with Yeovil Townnext up.

Wolves Michael Kightly could be poised to sign as both cluibs have agreed a fee for him. If he signs he may feature in the Torquay game.

Michael Owen may be a Stoke player by the end of the week if some rumours are to be believed.

No news on any outgoings although the Sentinel today hints Matthew Etherington could be temoted back to West Ham, especially as now his best friend in football James Collins (a former Stoke target) has moved back to West Ham from Villa.
