Danny Batth signs for Stoke

Stoke have signed defender Danny Batth from Wolves for an undisclosed fee on a three and a half years contract. Batth had been on loan at Middlesboro this season, a team manager by former Stoke boss Tony Pulis.

He may not be the only centre back joining as we have been linked with moves for Portsmouth’s Matt Clarke and Luton Town’s Justin James. Although we have an agreement with Luton that we won’t bid on any of their players this season, we can join in a bidding process once another makes an offer for a Luton player we are interested in. In this case Aston Villa are rumoured to be lining up a bid for Justin James.

Up front we are being linked with a move for Burnley’s Sam Vokes and Charlie Austin from Southampton.

The club have also said they will listen to offers for Peter Crouch and Darren Fletcher, both of whom are out of contract this summer and in Flecther’s case he has yet to play under new manager Nathan Jones. Wages will be the big issue in moving either player on from the club.

Ryan Sweeney has left Stoke signing for Mansfield Town on a free transfer. He has been on loan at Mansfield since the start of the season.

Match of the Week – Met Police v Newport County FA Cup 1 st Round

Posted in FA Cup, Football, non league footnball, Stoke City FC with tags , , , , , , , on November 9, 2018 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Stoke drew 0-0 against Tony Pulis’s Middlesbrough, no real surprise there although Ryan Shawcross was recalled to the defence following an injury to Erik Pieters.

The FA Cup first round this weekend and I going for the Met Police FC v League 2 side Newport County.

From their Wiki page –

“Metropolitan Police FC are based in East Molesey, Surrey. Originally made up of players from the Metropolitan Police Service, the rule requiring players to be employees of the service was removed when the Commissioner refused to sanction time off for playing. However, the club is still part-funded by a police staff lottery. They are currently members of the Southern League Premier Division South and play at Imber Court, the base of the Met Police Sports and Social Club.”

The Met Police FC have won through four qualifying rounds to reach the first round proper, whilst Newport County reached the FA Cup fourth round for the first time since 1979 last season, losing to Tottenham in the replay.

Should be a good cup tie and I will go for a 2-1 win for Newport.

Match of the week – Stoke City v Middlesboro

Posted in Championship, Didcot Town FC, Football, Match of the Week, non league footnball, Stoke City FC with tags , , , , , , , on October 31, 2018 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Stoke’s next home match see us play host to promotion hopefuls Middlesbrough. Currently third, they are managed by former Stoke manager Tony Pulis, who got us promoted in the Premier League. He will be after a Binary Pulis 1-0 away win I am sure. Also in the Boro team is former player Ryan Shotton, born in Fenton. I am going for a one all draw and a few bookings for both teams.

Peter Etebo should be back in contention for Stoke, whilst Tom Edwards will want to keep his place following an impressive display against Bristol City.

Great win for Didcot Town last night in their FA Trophy replay at Magnotsfield. They ran out 4-2 winners after extra time and player manager Andy Ballard scored! Next up in the FA Trophy is an away trip to Folkestone Invicta on November 10th.

Berahino signs and two youngsters out on loan

Stoke City finally signed Saido Berahino from West Brom on a five and half year deal for at least £12m, rising to possibly £15m with add ons/clauses. Hopefully he can rediscover his goal scoring form of the 2014-15 season. His signing could see Bojan leave this week with Middlesboro the most likely destination still.

Two youngsters have gone on loan for the rest of the season…Ollie Shenton has joined Wrexham and Ryan Sweeney has gone to Bristol Rovers. Shenton was tipped to break into first team action after a couple of subs appearances in the 2014-15 season. This is the first loan period for Shenton which will hopefully develop his potential further. Sweeney joined us in the summer from AFC Wimbledon after impressing greatly during his time there.

Bojan, Crouch and Walters

Bojan looks to be the centre of a bid from Middlesboro, although Mark Hughes in his press conference today said Bojan was going nowhere, although he is injured and misses tomorrow’s game at Sunderland.

Peter Crouch has signed a one year extension to his current contract which keeps him at the club until 2018.

Jonathan Walters has had knee surgery and is likely to be out for a few weeks.

Only one incoming transfer has gained any traction, the continued pursuit of West Brom’s Saido Berahnio. Spurs are reportedly interested again with Pulis and West Brom keener to cash in now as Berahino’s contract expires this summer.

Former Stokies Woodgate & Hill released by their clubs

A few notable names from  the past have been released by their current clubs including Jonathan Woodgate leaving the newly promoted Middlesboro. Popular defender Clint Hill has been released by QPR after six years at the club. If Hill was a little younger (he’s noe 37), I am sure Pulis would be interested in signing him. At the same club Karl Henry looks set to be offered a new deal.

Danny Pugh is looking to extend his current stay at Bury. Carl Dickinson is currently out of contract at Port Vale and has been offered a new, lower waged deal.

Former striker Ricardo Fuller announced his retirement from football on May 16 after a short spell at Oldham.

The ever readable 4231 Stoke blog has a list of possible British born players Mark Hughes and his management  may be interested in. They include Nathan Redmond, John Ruddy and Michael Carrick (what an excellent free signing he’d be).

Dean Whitehead signs for Middlesborough

Dean Whitehead has signed for Middlesboro after being released by Stoke. A great servant for the club and model professional, albeit one who like to keep the referee busy. Who will we have now to guess the time Whitehead would be yellow carded in a game?

Glyn Hodges has left QPR as a coach to join up again with Mark Hughes at Stoke.

Rumours have us linked with Burnley striker Charlie Austin and Leeds Utd’s Sam Byram. The latter possible seen at Clayton Woods today for a medical according to Stoke Loud & Proud, one of the Stoke City Facebook pages.
