Bojan, Crouch and Walters

Posted in Football, football transfers, Stoke City FC, The Premiership, Transfer rumours with tags , , , , , on January 13, 2017 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Bojan looks to be the centre of a bid from Middlesboro, although Mark Hughes in his press conference today said Bojan was going nowhere, although he is injured and misses tomorrow’s game at Sunderland.

Peter Crouch has signed a one year extension to his current contract which keeps him at the club until 2018.

Jonathan Walters has had knee surgery and is likely to be out for a few weeks.

Only one incoming transfer has gained any traction, the continued pursuit of West Brom’s Saido Berahnio. Spurs are reportedly interested again with Pulis and West Brom keener to cash in now as Berahino’s contract expires this summer.

Grant signs and Frank Soo book

Stoke have signed goalkeeper Lee Grant from Derby County on a permanent contract following a loan spell since last August. He has joined on a two and half year contract for a few of £1.3m.

We have three players at the African Cup of Nations this month – Bony, Diouf and Sobhi.Bony had been the subject of a possible move to China but he seems to be staying out to see his season long loan out and get back into the starting XI.

Not much else transfer wise bar the possibility of Peter Crouch and Ibrahim Afellay both being offered new deals as their current ones finish this summer. Quite a few players are out of contract this summer including Glen Johnson, Stephen Ireland, Charlie Adam, Phil Bardsley and Shay Given. Plus we’ve still got Dionatan Teixeira on our books until June!!!

Recently published is a biography of Stoke player Frank Soo called ‘The Wanderer’ by Susan Gardiner. You can see more here at https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wanderer-Story-Frank-Soo/dp/0995539618

Stevenage 0-4 Stoke City

Posted in Football, football transfers, Stoke City FC, The Premiership with tags , , , , , on August 23, 2016 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Pretty easy stroll through round 2 of the Football League Cup. Peter Crouch scored a hat trick with Phil Bardsley getting the other goal.

No transfer news of note with Man Utd defender Phil Jones looking unlikely to join us.

Stoke’s 25 man squad as it stands now plus Pugh to Blackpool!

Posted in Football, football transfers, Stoke City FC, The Premiership with tags , , , , , , , on July 28, 2016 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

The current 25 man squad as it stands is as follows:

GK: Butland, Haugaard, Given

D: Johnson, Bardsley, Shawcross, Wollscheid, Cameron, Wilson, Muniesa, Pieters, Teixiera

M: Allen, Whelan, Imbula, Adam, Afellay (injured Jan 17), Ireland (injured Feb 17)

S: Walters, Shaqiri, Bojan, Joselu, Crouch, Diouf, Arnautovic

With long-term injuries to Afellay and Ireland unlikely they will be named in the 25 man squad that lasts until January plus Teixiera will surely be moved on/left out. Possible new signings look set tom include a striker – Berahino is first choice target for the club – and possibly defensive cover for Shawcross. New signing Sobhi is under-21 so doesn’t count in the 25 man squad.

Peter Crouch has been linked with a move away again, this time with Swansea according to the Sun.

Rotherham United is now home to two former Stoke players, Danny Collins and Lewis Buxton. Meanwhile ‘The Beast’ aka Jon parkin has signed a one year deal with league Two side Newport County after leaving Forest Green Rovers.

Danny Pugh has a job on his hands after signing for Blackpool, a club beset by off the field problems. Pugh signed a one year deal after leaving Bury. Peter Odemwingie is still on trial with Hull City despite the departure of manager Steve Bruce last week. Hopefully he can get a contract there as be good to see him play in the Premier League still.

74 injuries and Tuncay is back!

Posted in Football, News, Stoke City FC, The Premiership with tags , , , , , , , , , on April 26, 2016 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

An interesting article in the Sentinel showed we have had 74 injuries this season to date – compare that to just 18 for Champions in waiting Leicester. That is an enormous number and could go some way to explaining our inconsistent form this season, the latest being a disappointing 4-0 defeat away at Man City at the weekend. Another factor is the team performance, or more precisely the lack of team performance, as few players seem to be battling and working as a team on the pitch of late. Wollscheid hits the nail on the head in his interview here.

We need to finish our last three games with some of that old battling Stoke spirit as three more losses will carry on into next season and with a summer that could see Arnie leave, possibly followed by others like Crouch?

Afellay is out for what looks like the remainder of the year, so Mark Hughes will definitely need some summer signings as cover. Better news in that Marc Wilson played a behind closed doors friendly against Crewe as he continues his comeback from injury.

Tony Pulis and his current side West Brom all but dented Spurs title hopes last night and paved the way for Leicester to be crowned champions – in Pulis we trust 😉

Tuncay will be back at the Brit! He’s the latest player to be confirmed for Andy Wilkinson’s testimonial game on Monday 16 May at 7:45pm. Others set to feature include Mama Sidibe, Ricardo Fuller, James Beattie, Danny Higginbotham, Liam Lawrence, Mark Stein, Peter Crouch and Asmir Begovic.

Stoke City 3-1 Norwich

Posted in Football, football transfers, Stoke City FC, The Premiership with tags , , , , , , on January 14, 2016 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Good win last night against a 10 man Norwich after Gary O’Neill was sent off for a reckless tackle. An own goal plus goals from Walters and Joselu saw Stoke up to seventh in the table.

Injury wise Shaqiri is out for up to a fortnight and will miss this weekend’s Arsenal game.

Marko Arnautovic is apparently stalling on signing an extension to his existing contract which has 18 months left to run. Better news in that young prospect Ollie Shenton has signed a new contract up to 2020.

No transfer activity yet as we enter the halfway stage of the January transfer window. Peter Crouch is being linked with a move to QPR and Steve Sidwell could be Reading bound. Mark Hughes did hint at some transfer activity this month, however a lot will depend on availability of potential targets and moving on some out fringe players.

Stoke City 2-0 Man Utd & Pieters signs

Posted in Football, football transfers, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership with tags , , , , , , on December 26, 2015 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

What a great result today against a Man Utd side who really are struggling under the rigid tactics of their manager. Bojan opened the scoring from an assist from Glen Johnson, with Marko Arnautovic getting the second. Everton away next which will be a good game I am sure.

Erik Pieters has signed a contract extension until 2020. He has become a firm fan favorite and all we need now is Marko Arnautovic to sign a new contract. I am sure we can persuade him to stay on for another couple of seasons.

January transfer window could see a few fringe players leave like Steve Sidwell, Peter Crouch who must be hankering after first team football, Stephen Ireland (what has happened with him?) and possibly , although any move for him would be hampered by his recent injury.
