Big summer ahead for Stoke City…

Zouma, Stafylidis and Jese loans end and they will return to their respective clubs, whilst we will have returning loanees Imbula, Bojan and Muniesa. Of those if we are relegated I am sure we will look to loan or sell Imbula. Jacob Haugaard, Glen Johnson and Charlie Adam are all out of contract in the summer, plus Stephen Ireland’s short term contract expires in June. That will be seven out of the squad for starters – can’t see us offering contracts to any of these four.

Then if/when we are relegated we will lose Shaqiri, Joe Allen and Jack Butland plus looks like Badou Ndiaye will be off and Ramadan Sobhi.

Does leave a big rebuilding job for whoever is in charge come the summer (I do think Paul Lambert will be kept on) and hopefully the likes of Grant, Shawcross, Martins Indi, Cameron, Diouf and Bauer will stay, plus Crouch and even Darren Fletcher could prove better at Championship level. That leaves the flops like Berahino and Wimmer to deal with as well, plus Afellay will surely be on his way given recent events. The positive is the decent batch of younger players we have including Tyrese Campbell, Tom Edwards and Sorenson.

Whatever league we end up in next season it will require a massive squad overhaul and rebuilding, which has been long overdue and one of the reasons why we have struggled this season with an unbalanced squad.

Crouch signs one year contract extension

Peter Crouch has signed a one year extension to his current contract taking him up to 2019 at the club. At 36 he still has a few years and goals in him and one of the best Stoke signings in recent years.

January we could see Charlie Adam and Glen Johnson shown the door, whilst Stephen Ireland, who’s current short term deal finishes in January, could also leave after being offered a reduced terms contract until next summer. Lets hope Johnson goes absolute waste signing him for another year as he is way past his best.

Peter Crouch will be taking over the weeknight Radio X Evening Show between 7pm and 10pm from Monday 24 July for a fortnight. He will also host the listeners’ Sunday afternoons from 1-4pm while regular host Gordon Smart is on holiday.

Crouch told the station’s official website: “I love Radio X and the music the station plays so I’m excited about being in the hot seat. I have a few stories I’m looking forward to sharing, and some visitors I’m looking forward to welcoming to the studio. All will be revealed next week.”

Bojan, Crouch and Walters

Bojan looks to be the centre of a bid from Middlesboro, although Mark Hughes in his press conference today said Bojan was going nowhere, although he is injured and misses tomorrow’s game at Sunderland.

Peter Crouch has signed a one year extension to his current contract which keeps him at the club until 2018.

Jonathan Walters has had knee surgery and is likely to be out for a few weeks.

Only one incoming transfer has gained any traction, the continued pursuit of West Brom’s Saido Berahnio. Spurs are reportedly interested again with Pulis and West Brom keener to cash in now as Berahino’s contract expires this summer.

Grant signs and Frank Soo book

Stoke have signed goalkeeper Lee Grant from Derby County on a permanent contract following a loan spell since last August. He has joined on a two and half year contract for a few of £1.3m.

We have three players at the African Cup of Nations this month – Bony, Diouf and Sobhi.Bony had been the subject of a possible move to China but he seems to be staying out to see his season long loan out and get back into the starting XI.

Not much else transfer wise bar the possibility of Peter Crouch and Ibrahim Afellay both being offered new deals as their current ones finish this summer. Quite a few players are out of contract this summer including Glen Johnson, Stephen Ireland, Charlie Adam, Phil Bardsley and Shay Given. Plus we’ve still got Dionatan Teixeira on our books until June!!!

Recently published is a biography of Stoke player Frank Soo called ‘The Wanderer’ by Susan Gardiner. You can see more here at https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wanderer-Story-Frank-Soo/dp/0995539618

Stevenage 0-4 Stoke City

Pretty easy stroll through round 2 of the Football League Cup. Peter Crouch scored a hat trick with Phil Bardsley getting the other goal.

No transfer news of note with Man Utd defender Phil Jones looking unlikely to join us.
