Odemwingie to West Ham?

Posted in Football, football transfers, Stoke City FC, The Premiership with tags , , , , on August 8, 2016 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

After having an unsuccessful trial at Hull City, scuppered by manager Steve Bruce quitting, Peter Odenwingie is possibly having a trial with West Ham with a view to a permanent move.

Stoke lost 1-0 to Hamburg in our final pre-season friendly, whilst the under-23 squad beat Rhyl 6-0 including a hat trick from Jon Walters. Walters played alongside Marc Wilson as the under-23 squad are allowed to field three players over 23 years old. Wilson could be on his way out of the club, especially after recent comments on Twitter over the weekend questioning Stoke’s defensive training.

Stoke’s 25 man squad as it stands now plus Pugh to Blackpool!

The current 25 man squad as it stands is as follows:

GK: Butland, Haugaard, Given

D: Johnson, Bardsley, Shawcross, Wollscheid, Cameron, Wilson, Muniesa, Pieters, Teixiera

M: Allen, Whelan, Imbula, Adam, Afellay (injured Jan 17), Ireland (injured Feb 17)

S: Walters, Shaqiri, Bojan, Joselu, Crouch, Diouf, Arnautovic

With long-term injuries to Afellay and Ireland unlikely they will be named in the 25 man squad that lasts until January plus Teixiera will surely be moved on/left out. Possible new signings look set tom include a striker – Berahino is first choice target for the club – and possibly defensive cover for Shawcross. New signing Sobhi is under-21 so doesn’t count in the 25 man squad.

Peter Crouch has been linked with a move away again, this time with Swansea according to the Sun.

Rotherham United is now home to two former Stoke players, Danny Collins and Lewis Buxton. Meanwhile ‘The Beast’ aka Jon parkin has signed a one year deal with league Two side Newport County after leaving Forest Green Rovers.

Danny Pugh has a job on his hands after signing for Blackpool, a club beset by off the field problems. Pugh signed a one year deal after leaving Bury. Peter Odemwingie is still on trial with Hull City despite the departure of manager Steve Bruce last week. Hopefully he can get a contract there as be good to see him play in the Premier League still.

Odemwingie and Sidwell released

Posted in Football, football transfers, Stoke City FC, The Premiership with tags , , , on June 13, 2016 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

No real surprises in Stoke City’s retained list with Peter Odemwingie and Steve Sidwell both released now that their contracts have expired. Sidwell has already found a new club signign with Brighton on a one year deal, following been on loan with them last season.

Nothing much happening on transfers bar rumours and the ongoing saga of Arnautovic’s new contract. He has stated he wants to stay in the Premier League and won’t reveal more until Euro 2016 is finished.

Preseason friendlies

Andy Wilkinson scored a last minute penalty in his testimonial match yesterday and as Stoke fans have always said, if Wilko scores we are on the pitch…the fans kept their promise 🙂

A great player for the club, wishing Andy Wilkinson all the best in the future.

Summer transfer rumours will be in full swing and we need to fill a few gaps in our 25 man squad with Peter Odemwingie out of contract and being released. Steve Sidwell is also likely to be given a free following his recent loan spell at Brighton. A key piece of summer business will be sorting the future of Marko Arnautovic which is still up in the air, despite him having a year left on his current contract. Shades of N’Zonzi as Marko’s agent is a family member (his brother) and he won the player’s Player of the Year Award for this season, as did N’Zonzi.

The season may have only just finished, however the club have already outlined their preseason plans. Stoke City will have a preseason training camp in Germany and then a 10 day trip during July to the USA, which includes one friendly already confirmed against Orlando.

Preseason friendlies:

Sat 16 July Burton Albion (A)

Sat July 23 Preston (A)

Wed July 27 Orlando (A)

Date & opposition TBC another friendly whilst in the USA

Odemwingie on loan to Bristol City

Peter Odemwingie has seemingly played his last game for Stoke as he has gone on loan for the rest of the season to Bristol City. Mark Hughes said in his weekly press conference Odemwingie needed regular football and the club would not be looking to renew his contract in the summer.

He has played 27 times for Stoke, scoring 5 goals, although a bad injury ruled him out for most of the 2014/15 season. A good character on and off the pitch a good signing for us, just sadly blighted by that injury and by the time he was fit again we had a whole host of new players ahead of him.

He made a positive impact coming on as a sub on his debut as Bristol City beat Fulham at Craven Cottage 2-1.

Wilson injury and late bid for Berahino?

Posted in Football, football transfers, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership with tags , , , , , , on January 31, 2016 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

More injury woes for us with Marc Wilson out for three months, meaning we are running short of centre backs with Shawcross (due back in March) and the versatile Cameron both injured. Cameron could be back for the weekend though. Possibly a late loan bid for a centre back before deadline day tomorrow? Tottenham’s Federico Fazio possibly? That’s what the Sentinel think, although he could be on the way back to Spain.

As deadline day draws near we are of course being linked with lots of players, one of which is West Brom’s outcast Saido Berahino. Newcastle have had a bid of £21m rejected already and Sky say we are interested possibly in advanced talks, not so says the Sentinel.

Odemwingie could be on his way to a loan move with Marseille, although he was linked with Sunderland earlier in the week.

League Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1972

Good, solid performance and win for us last night. It now means our first League Cup semi-final appearance since 1972, when of course Stoke beat Chelsea in the final. Even Phil Bardsley scored and managed to stay on the pitch! Only downside was Peter Crouch’s injury, which looked to be a hamstring and it may sideline him for the upcoming festive fixtures.

January transfer window is looming with a defensive central midfielder top of Stoke’s shopping list. Likely to see a few leaving on loan or on permanent deals particularly Stephen Ireland who didn’t even make the bench last night. Odemwingie could leave on loan, as he is injured currently and sadly seems to have not got back to his electric pace of old before last season’s long term injury. Bardsley and Steve Sidwell are other possible departures.
