Brighton & Pompey promoted; Johnson extends contract

Brighton clinched promotion to the Premier League at the weekend, which will see a nice day trip down to the south coast for us next season. Looks like Newcastle will land the other automatic promotion spot, although both Reading and Huddersfield could catch them if they win all their remaining games and Newcastle slip-up.

Really pleased to see Portsmouth finally achieve promotion to League One. FA Cup winners in 2008 and then relegated from the Premier League in 2010 – not that long ago in the football world. It has taken them four seasons to escape League Two, a timely reminder to current Premier League fans of how a team can really drop like a stone. More recently we have Blackpool, who may clinch a play-off place in League Two, another team beset by off field problems that has seen the club on successive relegation’s since being relegated from the Premier League.

Stoke news and Glen Johnson has signed a one year extension to his current contract taking him up to the summer of 2018. Phil Bardsley and Charlie Adam are both awaiting news on whether their contracts will be renewed as both are out contract this summer.

Attendance 10,312

Walters (2), Crouch

Butland; Wilkinson, Shawcross (c), Huth, Muniesa; Cameron (Sidwell), Adam; Odemwingie (Shenton), Walters, Moses (Arnautovic); Crouch

No Bojan (ribs) or Bardsley (knee) who were both rested after failing late fitness tests.

Good win and a morale boost for the team and the players looking to make the starting XI. Two goals from Super Jonny Walters and a late Peter Crouch effort, although it could have been more save for the heroics of the Pompey keeper Paul Jones. Good to see Academy starlet and local lad Ollie Shenton get a run out, he’s only sixteen! Moses played well too and will surely make the bench, if not start against Man City on Saturday.

We have drawn Sunderland away in the next round, not a great draw for us.

Ryan Shotton has left the club to join Derby County on loan with a permanent deal to follow. Good luck to him, always gave his all and a versatile player who should do well at Derby.

Mark Hughes has recently said the club’s ins/outs have been concluded for this transfer window.
