Music for 2016: POWER QUEST are back!

Oh yes one of my favorite bands are back…Power Quest!

The band split-up back in 2013 and founding member Steve Williams was in Eden’s Curse, who he has recently left to start Power Quest off again.

The line-up features Steve Williams joined by three members from the band’s last line-up, namely guitarist Gavin Owen, bass player Paul Finnie and drummer Rich Smith. The two new members are Dan Owen on guitars and Ashley Edison on vocals, who also fronts the rather good Dendera.

The band headline a comeback show at the Underworld, Camden on September 10th.

The Quest must go on!

Music for 2016: SHADOW HUNTERS

Describing themselves as “Modern Energetic Sci-Fi Rock”, Norway’s Shadow Hunters merge epic goth rock instrumentation with powerful, anthemic vocals and visceral, fast-paced guitars – a sound which led to their last song premiering exclusively on Kerrang!

I must admit to being rather partial to this song and it reminded me of Aussie prog metal band Voyager.

Now this band are one of the many delights I have discovered whilst reviewing for GRTR! I was lucky to finally see them in concert last year supporting the talc bothering Power Wolf (another highly recommended band), needless to say they didn’t disappoint. This looks a ‘must have’…

ORDEN OGAN: 2DVD/2CD Box Set “The Book Of Ogan” to be released on March 18th

Rising German power metal force ORDEN OGAN follows up on the success of their latest studio album „Ravenhead“ (which became an international chart success in 2015) with their first ever DVD release. But “The Book Of Ogan” is so much more than that… The package consists of 2 DVDs (running time 6 hours – incl. 2 full Live concerts, extensive band documentary, all music videos & numerous specials) and 2 CDs (“Best Of 2008 – 2015” and the self-released/demo “Testimonium a.d.” from 2004). While the “Best Of” is an exclusive selection of the band’s hits and fan favorites from their four albums, “Testimonium a.d.” is made available for the first time ever as official label release here. It received highest ratings in the demo sections of the leading metal magazines back then and was dealt for up to 500€ (!). „The Book Of Ogan“ comes as deluxe 2DVD/2CD box set (hardcover, separate trays for each disc, 40-pages booklet) and is a must for both longtime followers and new fans!

New music and some older gems…

Plenty of good new music out there with L.R.S. (Frontiers) who feature Josh Ramos of the Storm fame, perfect for those after a Storm/Journey fix. Two good power metal albums are Gamma Ray’s ‘Empire of the Undead’ (earMusic), which sees the band still producing top notch power/speed metal. Also worthy of investigation is the latest Freedom Call ‘Believe’ (SPV) which may not be as instant as previous albums but soon grows on you and is certainly one of their more upbeat albums of late.

FM’s Steve Overland never seems to stop either recording or playing live with a new album under the Overland handle out now on Escape Music. This one is a highly polished melodic rock delight helped by having Mike Slammer involved and Billy Greer (Kansas) guesting too. FM themselves have a new EP called ‘Futurama’ out ahead of their tour with Foreigner and Europe in April. Mind you with eleven songs it’s hardly an EP! Like anything with FM’s name on it you can expect high quality studio and live songs.

Josh Tarek has been playing gigs up and down the UK these past twelve months and his re-issued debut album is well worth getting. Pop rock songs made for Radio 2’s daytime playlist. Continuing in the pop rock theme is the debut album from Circa Nova which features former Police guitarist Andy Summers. Some cracking pop gems on this one!

A couple of recent charity shop bargains include OMD’s ‘The Singles’ mainly as I was after their late 90’s singles and Blackfield’s debut album. Only played this twice so far and it is certainly not as instant as their following albums.
