Van Ginkel, Given and Johnson all join and Ness leaves

Stoke City have signed goalkeeper Shay Given on a free transfer after his release from Aston Villa. He joins on a two year contract and will be no.2 behind the new no.1 Jack Butland (assuming Begovic does join Chelsea!). Good signing given his experience and the age of our goalkeepers now, all of whom are under 26 years old.

We have also signed midfielder Marko van Ginkel from Chelsea on a season long loan (presumably part of the Begovic deal). This could be a steal of a signing, albeit on loan, given the potential he has.

Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has also signed on a free according to the Daily Mail and Sky Sports. Good cover for right back and I think he will be first choice ahead of Cameron and Bardsley.

Jamie Ness has left the club on a free transfer joining Scunthorpe. He had been on loan at Crewe last season and looked set to join on loan again. He’s never really featured at the club and was signed along with Maurice Edu (another recent flop) from Rangers by Pulis.

Summer Ins/Outs:

Jakob Haugaard (GK) £600k

Philipp Wollscheid (D) nominal fee

Glen Johnson (D) free

Shay Given (GK) free

Marko Van Ginkel (M) season long loan from Chelsea

Wilson Palacios (M) released

Rodgers

What a fantastic result and end to the current season 🙂

The goalscorers were Mama Diouf (2), Jon Walters, Charlie Adam, Peter Crouch and Steven N’Zonzi.

Some interesting records broken today:

Steven Gerrard has never lost a Premier League game by more than four goals.

Stoke are the first team to score five goals vs Liverpool in a league game since Coventry in December 1992.

This is Liverpool’s heaviest defeat since the 1950’s.

Stoke last scored more than five goals in a league game back in 1982.

Peter Crouch, with his goal today, became the leading all time scorer from headers in the Premier League.

Stoke’s highest ever win in the Premiership.

* Stoke City will play Brentford in a pre-season friendly on Saturday July 25th.

Players report back from pre-season training this week

Posted in Football, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership with tags , , , , , on July 7, 2014 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Stoke players report back for pre-season training on Wednesday 9th July. There will be four new faces – Phil Bardsley, Mama Diouf, Steve Sidwell and Dionatan Teixeira. Mark Hughes said recently he wants two more new players and it looks as though they would be ideally signed sooner rather than later, a distinct change from the transfer deadline day madness we were used to under Pulis.

Robert Huth is expected to be ready for pre-season training to and I am sure he will update Stoke fans via his Twitter account when/if he makes pre-season.

So far only Michael Kightly has left to join Burnley, although players like Ryan Shotton, Maurice Edu, Jamie Ness and Wilson Palacios look set to leave if suitable clubs can be found.

Few former players on the move as Liam Lawrence joined Shrewsbury Town on a free and signed a two year contract. Chris Iwelumo has signed for Conference Premier side Chester and Louis Moult (he never really troubled the first team whilst at the club) has joined Wrexham. Surprised Matthew Etherington hasn’t found a club as yet.

Squad numbers announced

The club have announced the new squad numbers and you can check them here

New signings Erik Peters gets the number three shirt with Marc Muniesa having the number five shirt and Brek Shea gets the number 11 shirt.

The players are back for pre-season trainign and are off to France on Wednesday until the weekend for a trainign camp. Only Kenwyne Jones and Brek Shea are misisng as they are playing the CONCAF Gold Cup for their respective national teams.

Rumours of departing players include Wilson Palacios to Hull City to rejoin his former manager Steve Bruce; Maurice Edu to make a permanent move to Turkey; Matthew Etherington to Millwall; Kenwyne Jones  to the Chinese league and Peter Crouch to Trabzonspor. Palacios and Edu seem the most likely this week.

Incoming? Possibly Jermaine Defoe from Spurs.

Team back for pre-season with one new face…

The team are back for pre-season training and you can see photos here on the official website. Jamie Ness joined his new team mates and possibly he will be joined soon by Geoff Cameron. Otherwise its all rumours regarding new signings and the Michael Owen rumour is still going strong. Tony Pulis is apparently already in Switzerland where the players will head for a game against FC Sion on Thursday 19th July.

Woodgate to be offered a one year contract

Posted in Football, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership with tags , , , , , on May 26, 2012 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Woodgate is to be offered a one year contract according to the Sentinel today. The article also hints if he agrees Matthew Upson could leave, although he still has a year left on his contract. Hopefully both can stay, although I’d plump for Upson as he is more versatile and rarely has a bad game.

Two more pre-season friendlies have been confirmed against Yeovil Town and Torquay Utd. Still no news on the traditional Newcastle Town fixture though:

July 12th – Players Return
July 24th – Columbus Crew
July 28th – Orlando City
August 1st – Sporting Kansas City
August 6th – Torquay United
August 7th – Yeovil Town
August 18th – Premier League Kick-Off
