Football league trophy draw

Stoke have been drawn in northern group C with Bradford, Morecambe and Bury as part of the revamped Football league Trophy. From this season the League 1 and 2 clubs are joined by leading Academies from the Premiership and Championship, which includes Stoke. We will field an under 23’s team and have won this trophy back in 1992 and 2000.

Originally, 15 Premier League teams, along with Newcastle in the Championship, were invited to include Academy sides in the competition. However Arsenal, Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd, Newcastle and Tottenham have rejected the offers and been replaced by Blackburn, Brighton, Derby, Norwich, Reading and Wolves.

The first round will involve 16 groups of four teams organised on a regional basis, with each group including at least one club from each of League One and League Two. Teams will play each other once, either at home or away, with a penalty shoot-out in the event of a draw. The final will be at Wembley Stadium on Sunday April 2.

Choulay/Moha was involved in QPR’s friendly with Burton Albion last night and was listed as a trialist with a view to a possible loan move to QPR. Stoke signed him from Barcelona last summer although he has not made a first team appearance to date.

Julien N’Goy (who earned rave reviews for his performance against Preston at the weekend), Ollie Shenton , goalkeeper Daniel Gyollai, Joel Taylor, Eddy Lecygne and George Waring have all travelled with the first team squad to Orlando.

Former Stokies Woodgate & Hill released by their clubs

A few notable names from  the past have been released by their current clubs including Jonathan Woodgate leaving the newly promoted Middlesboro. Popular defender Clint Hill has been released by QPR after six years at the club. If Hill was a little younger (he’s noe 37), I am sure Pulis would be interested in signing him. At the same club Karl Henry looks set to be offered a new deal.

Danny Pugh is looking to extend his current stay at Bury. Carl Dickinson is currently out of contract at Port Vale and has been offered a new, lower waged deal.

Former striker Ricardo Fuller announced his retirement from football on May 16 after a short spell at Oldham.

The ever readable 4231 Stoke blog has a list of possible British born players Mark Hughes and his management  may be interested in. They include Nathan Redmond, John Ruddy and Michael Carrick (what an excellent free signing he’d be).

Stoke City 3-1 QPR

A Jon Walters hat trick, the first by any Stoke City player since we have been in the Premier League. It couldn’t happen to a better player, who always gives 100% on the pitch and is a model professional footballer. A proper Stoke legend and he has been a key player for us, along with Glen Whelan and Ryan Shawcross, as the team has progressed and evolved since the early days in the Premiership.

Stoke City 3-1 Wrexham FA Cup 3rd round

At one nil down I did think ‘here we go again…’ losing to lower league teams. Luckily a late goal surge courtesy of Arnie and two from Stephen Ireland saved our blushes. Wrexham deserved a draw really although not complaining! Fourth round draw is on Monday 5th January.

Transfer wise we are set to sign German international and centre-half Philipp Wollscheid on loan until the end of the season. There would then be an option to sign on a permanent deal in the summer if he impresses and he gets a taste for oatcakes 😉 This could mean the end of Robert Huth’s time at Stoke though.

Elsewhere Wilson Palacios could join Brighton on loan and we are again linked to QPR’s Junior Hoilett. We were linked to him in the summer, mainly as Mark Hughes brought him over to the UK.

Brek Shea poised to join Orlando City

Seems Brek Shea is set to join Orlando City on a permanent deal shortly. He has not really shown much for us and has just returned from a so-so loan spell at Birmingham City. Hopefully we can get shot of Maurice Edu who is currently on loan with MLS side Philadelphia Union. Quite possibly the worst signing by Pulis!

With the January transfer window soon not sure how much, if any, funds Mark Hughes will be given. Peter Crouch and Glen Whelan are both out of contract in the summer and could move in January if they are not offered or sign new deals. Whelan has already been linked to Swansea City and Crouch to Palace and QPR.

QPR 2-2 Stoke City

Two points dropped or a valuable away point? Leading 2-1 a late QPR equaliser knocked the wind out of Stoke who played some decent football again. Great to see Diouf on the score sheet again and Crouch got the second goal.

Begovic, Bardsley, Pieters, Shawcross, Wilson, Whelan, Nzonzi, Adam (Sidwell), Moses (Arnautovic), Diouf, Crouch Subs: Sorensen, Huth, Muniesa, Assaidi, Bojan

Next up Sunderland away in the Carling Cup and then Newcastle at home, who chances are will have dispensed with the services of Alan Pardew and we all know we never do well against manger less teams…

New signings?

Looks like Mark Hughes is getting a move on with his summer signings as Brazilian central defender Dionatan Teixeira (nickname ‘John’!) is set to sign for a fee of around £600k after a successful trial. He’s only 21 and has been in the Manchester City youth team a few years ago. Meanwhile, in the Academy young Australian striker Peter Skapetis has signed from QPR.

Meanwhile heading for the exit looks to be Cameron Jerome, who despite a year left on his contract is not likely to join Pulis at Crystal Palace permanently. Michael Kightly is in advanced stages of confirming a permanent transfer to Burnley where he has proved a hit on loan this season. Matthew Etherington is definitely leaving in the summer, with others yet to have their future at the club decided including Thomas Sorenson and Brek Shea.
