Great to see Rory Delap back at Stoke as part of Gary Rowett’s backroom team. Joining Delap are Kevin Phillips, Callum Davidson, Mark Sale, Dave Carolan and Joe Carnall.

Phillips, Davidson, Delap and Sale will operate as first team coaches, with Phillips, Davidson and Delap working specifically with strikers, midfielders and defenders respectively. Carolan is Head of Performance and Carnall Head of Tactical Insights. Andy Quy will continue in his role as goalkeeping coach.

Great news to see Joe Allen sign a new four year contract. The sort of player and attitude we need in the coming season, with hopefully Jack Butland staying on at least for next season as there has not been any confirmed interest in him as yet from other clubs.

Gary Rowett’s backroom staff should start to be confirmed shortly with current U18’s coach at Derby and Stoke favourite Rory Delap set to join the staff. Goalkeeping coach Andy Quy will remain in post. Callum Davidson, currently assistant boss at St Johnstone, is also set to join the backroom team.

Another pre-season friendly has been announced, away at Walsall on Saturday July 14th.

Stoke City name Gary Rowett as the new manager

Stoke City have announced Gary Rowett as our new manager on a three year deal. He was previously at Derby who recently lost in the Championship play-off semi-final to Fulham. He has had previous managerial spells at Birmingham and Burton Albion.

Speaking to the club website Gary said –

“I am sure I will speak to some players over the next few days and few weeks to ascertain which of them are prepared to come back and put their bodies on the line to effectively get success for this Club.”

Rowett admitted that he was impressed that a number of the playing squad had already signalled their intent to help the Club rebuild on the back of a disappointing campaign which ended the Potters’ 10-year stay in the top-flight.

“It just shows how good this Club is firstly, but it also signals what sort of characters those guys are,” he added.

“That is what you want in these sort of situations – to keep players of genuine Premier League quality, providing they have a Premier League mentality.

No news on his backroom team yet although former player Rory Delap currently manages the Derby U23’s and he would be warmly welcomes back by Stoke fans should he join Gary Rowett’s staff.

Moritz Bauer (one of the players who has stated his desire to stay and help the club back up) and Kevin Wimmer (a player we could do without next season!), have both been called into Austria’s squad for three international friendlies. Wimmer is being linked with a season long loan move to Hannover 96.

Geoff Cameron could be on his way back to his native US to play in the MLS league. It will depend on what the new boss Gary Rowett sees as Cameron’s role in the coming season.

Already we are being linked with players and one is Notts Forest’s Eric Lichaj according to HITC.

Wilko testimonial and Butland injured

First the band news, Jack Butland is out for three months with ankle ligament damage after coming off in the England friendly against Germany. A big blow to us and Butland who would have been in England’s Euro 2016 finals squad.

Andy Wilkinson has been given a testimonial game by the club after recently retiring due to a head injury. It takes place at the Britannia Stadium on Monday 16th May at 7pm. The list of ex-Stoke players lined-up is rather good including Mark Stein, Rory Delap, Ricardo Fuller, Abdoulaye Faye, Karl Henry, John Eustace, Peter Odemwingie, Carlo Nash, Salif Diao, Andy Griffin (no bitch slapping with Fuller please!), Steve Simeonson, Carl Dickinson, Danny Higginbotham, Mama Sidibe, James Beattie, Dean Whitehad (the return of the ‘What minute in the match will Deano be booked?’ sweepstake) and Matty Etherington.

That is some line-up and wonder if Tony Pulis will be involved, maybe managing one of the teams? Or Nello?

Rory Delap signs for Burton Albion

Stoke legend Rory Delap has signed for Burton Albion, good luck to him and I am sure he will be hit with their fans like he was at Stoke.

Few striker rumours with Senegalese Mame Diouf (briefly at Man Utd) a possible target according to the Facebook page Stoke Loud & Proud. The Mirror looks set to run with this story too. Jermaine Defoe is another rumour and Peter Crouch going back to QPR still gets a mention as a possible transfer. I would have thought Hughes would like another striker to increase his options as we are not the most prolific team upfront!

The under-21’s beat Conwy Borough 3-1 in a friendly on Wednesday night and the ga

me featured two trialists, Barcelona midfielder Fernando Quesada and Swedish striker Victor Soderstrom, who scored as well and he is big striker.

Matthew Uspon has penned a one year deal with Brighton who he was on loan at last season.

Rory Delap played for Burton Albion last night in one of their pre-season games. He may join the League Two club as he wants to stay near his home in Derbyshire.

Carlo Nash looks set to sign for Norwich as their third choice keeper.

Stoke release seven players

Posted in Football, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership with tags , , on June 6, 2013 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Stoke have announced their end of season retained list with seven players being Rory Delap, Matthew Lund, Carlo Nash, Mama Sidibe, Jermaine Pennant, Dean Whitehead and Matthew Upson. Plus of course Michael Owen retired at the end of the season.

Delap and Sidibe were instrumental in helping us gain promotion to the Premier League. Sad to see both leave, although Delap’s trademark throw in has been negated by most Premiership defences now (bar Arsenal!) and Big Mama has been injury plagued in the past couple of years. Sad to see Whitehead leave too, as not the most technical of players he puts in 100% effort and can play in a variety of positions. Plus Stoke fans will miss the yellow card sweepstake every time Whitehead is on the pitch as he does seem to like keep the referee’s pen busy!

Pennant may still yet be thrown a lifeline by Mark Hughes if press reports are anything to go by.

Upsonwill prove a valuable signing wherever he ends up after impressing at Brighton on loan last season. Good, solid player when called upon.

Nash will doubtless be off doing more traveling and publishing related books, whilst Lund never really broke into the squad and spent much of his time out on loan to lower league clubs. Shame as he came highly recommended when we signed him from Crewe.
