Shawcross new deal, Bojan off

Transfer deadline day summer 2017 has been busy at Stoke with Ryan Shawcross signing a new four year contract. He’s been with the club ten years and a very pleased we are keeping him on for a further four years.

Meanwhile, fellow defender Philipp Wollscheid has had the remaining year of his contract cancelled by mutual consent allowing him to join FC Metz.

Bojan has joined Alaves on a season long loan, despite Mark Hughes praising him and welcoming him back earlier this summer after his last season long loan! He has never been at his best since his long lay off due to an injury.

Imbula has joined Toulouse on a season long loan and would be surprised if he ever dons a Stoke shirt again.

Will it be Hughes? Or will it be Pulis?

The fixture computer certainly knows how to pick them as only six games into the new season and Stoke’s home game against West Brom this weekend is a real six pointer and it could see possibly both managers sacked. Mark Hughes is now the bookeis favorite to be the first Premiership manager to be sacked, taking over from previous favourite…West Brom’s Tony Pulis.

Bojan asks for the players to share the pain of defeat with Hughes and get believing in themselves again. It does appear that Hughes may have lost the dressing room as the old guard – the remaining Pulis era players- have yet to speak out about the current bad form and play, most notably the captain Ryan Shawcross, who should be leading the rallying calls for players and fans alike.

Something needs to change and quickly with -11 goal difference after only five games and in three of those games we have shipped four goals. Hughes Out is the cry on the Oatcake messageboard and I will give Hughes one more chance as we must win at home against West Brom. Hull at home in the League Cup before that and a chance to try some younger/fringe players with a bit more fire and steel in their play? Who to replace Hughes if he goes? Bournemouth’s Eddie Howe could do a good job, anyone but Steve McClaren 🙂

Injury update – Bardsley for Villa game?

Posted in Football, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership with tags , , , , , , , on February 24, 2016 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Sadly looks like Glen Johnson’s injury will sideline him for several weeks, possibly the rest of the season. A real blow given his form for us this season. So on Saturday against Aston Villa looks like we will have Phil Bardsley at right back – start a sweepstake when he will be booked then!

Texiera looks set to start in the centre of defence as Muniesa and Cameron are still doubts for the weekend. Ryan Shawcross seems to be a week or so away from contention, be good to have him in contention for the Newcastle game.

Sidwell off to the seaside…

Midfielder Steve Sidwell has signed with Brighton on loan for the rest of the season. He has only made four appearances for us this season, mainly in cup games. Sidwell is a decent player, just never really had a full run in the side and he is way down the pecking order now. Like fellow lost boy Stephen Ireland, he doesn’t even make the bench now. Good luck!

Ryan Shawcross picked up an injury at the weekend and it looks like we will be without him for up to a month. A big blow, especially with two big cup games this week – Liverpool tonight and Crystal Palace away on Saturday. We have cover although Marc Wilson never fills you with confidence and Muniesa is coming back from injury. Geoff Cameron is still doubtful, so maybe a lat minute transfer dash for a loanee centre back this week?

Stoke City 2-0 Man City

What a great result and performance by Stoke City. I was listening on the radio and Man City seemed dazed and confused. Good to see two assists by Xherdan Shaqiri, who is still desperate to get his first goal for us. Marko Arnautovic bagged both goals thanks to Shaqiri’s assists and good to see Afelay settling in more. We didn’t even have Diouf on the pitch and Walters only came on for the last ten minutes.

Stoke haven’t conceded a Premier League goal with Shawcross on the pitch this season.

FA Cup third round draw this evening, a home tie would be good.

Shaqiri signs!

Stoke have signed of Xherdan Shaqiri from Inter Milan for a club record fee of £12m (Peter Crouch for £10m was the previous record fee). The Swiss international winger has signed a five-year contract, a real statement of intent from the club.

I am liking him already with his quote to the official club website:
“I can’t wait to meet my new teammates and make my debut for the Club. It feels great to finally be a Potter!”

Worry over Ryan Shawcross and his back injury as he will require surgery meaning he could be out for at least two months. Maybe one more dip into the transfer market this window for a some cover at centre back?

Anyone fancy a game for Stoke at Villa?

Big worry defence wise ahead of Saturday’s game against Aston Villa as we have no Ryan Shawcross (should be back in a week), Geoff Cameron (suspended) and now Marc Muniesa is out for six weeks. Hopefully we should welcome back Marc Wilson and Erik Pieters though, along with Stephen Ireland. If not it is Wilko and Palacios at the back!

Mark Hughes has been unlucky with injuries this season, with more long term injuries than we have had for many a year. Still we can still give Villa a game if we manage to get a defence out and we have Andy Wilkinson, how good would it be if he scored the winner?
