After just eight months in charge Southampton have sacked Mark Hughes. His win percentage was even worse at Southampton than his time at Stoke

Mark Hughes appointed Southampton manager until end of the season

Mark Hughes, sacked by Stoke City after four and half years in charge, has been appointed Southampton manager until the end of the season – eight Premier League games plus the FA Cup QF this weekend away at Wigan. Previous clubs who appointed a manager for such a short time didn’t fare well – Hull (Dowie) and Newcastle (Shearer).

With West Brom all but relegated, the remaining two relegation places look to be between us, Palace, West Ham (the only PL club to have shipped more goals than us this season), Huddersfield and Southampton. Swansea could get dragged in again especially if the FA Cup proves a distraction and we play them away on the final game of this season, with Crystal Palace our final home game of the season the week before.

Stoke City transfer news

Weekend press reports have Stoke in pole position to sign West Brom striker Saido Berahino. If true, he could sign this week ahead of the players returning for pre-season training next week. One target we won’t be signing is Norwich’s Nathan Redmond who signed for manager-less Southampton.

One player heavily linked with a move away is Charlie Adam who is wanted by newly promoted Burnley and a move that could appeal to Adam as he would be guaranteed more starts.

Southampton 1-0 Stoke City

Not a great display from us in the first half, although we made a better showing in the second half. Although we lost Southampton are a very decent side, currently second in the league and we didn’t get tonked like Sunderland did the previous weekend. We play them next at home in the Capitol One Cup!

We need to start scoring more, taking those chances and it looks like a hard season ahead, especially as we keep losing key players to injury. The League Cup should see Bojan and Steve Sidwell get a run out.

Southampton 2-2 Stoke City

Good game and good away point. Good to see us come back twice from behind against a Southampton side who have a strong home record. Peter Odemwingie got his first goal for Stoke with Peter Crouch scoring the second goal.

Next up Swansea midweek who will be confident after beating Cardiff three nil today under caretaker boss Gary Monk.

Man Utd 3-2 Stoke City

Not been blogging for a wee while and after today’s defeat not sure I want too 😦

After taking a 2-1 lead into half time it was always going to happen with Man Utd getting back on top with two quick goals. We have seven points now with  a quarter of the season gone. Time to panic? Well go on the Oatcake message board and it’s a mix of some Hughes out types (pillocks to you and me), doom ‘n’ gloom merchants convinced we are down already and few more positive souls. I am with the latter for now, but we really need to put away these chances we keep creating. Take today’s game we could have been three or four up by half time.

Southampton at home next week and the way they are playing we need to make sure we get at least a point.

Stoke City 3-3 Southampton

Coming from 3-1 down at HT Stoke showed their spirit again with a wonder strike from Cameron Jerome for the last minute equaliser. With Shawcross and Geoff Cameron serving one match bans we had starts for Ryan Shotton and Matthew Upson. We were not the best at the back with a Wilkinson own goal but we got a well deserved point. Man City on Tuesday and then Crystal Palace away in the third round of the FA Cup.

Transfer rumours hotting up with the Daily Mail reporting Shawcross to Man City; Michael Owen going Espanyol on loan is a Twitter rumour and Blackburn’s Martin Olsson is back on the Pulis radar.
