Dean Whitehead retires and Lambert’s future in the balance

Dean Whitehead has announced he is retiring from playing at the age of 36. Whitehead played 158 times for Stoke between 2009 and 2013, will next season manage the under-17’s at his current club Huddersfield.

Darren Fletcher has said he would be up for staying at Stoke next season, although that will depend on who is in charge as he has not featured much under Paul Lambert. He has one year left of a two year contract he signed when joined a free transfer last summer.

Lambert will learn his fate after our final game of this season away at Swansea. Personally I hope we part ways with him as despite shoring up the defence, his record of one win since he joined in January is very poor and he doesn’t inspire me to think we can be in a chance of promotion if he stays. The Daily Telegraph broke the story that there was a clause in Lambert’s contract where either he or the club could walks away from the contract after this season finished. Mixed messages from the club as to whether he is staying and don’t be surprised if he is given a chance by the club to lead Stoke in the Championship next season. Graham Potter, a former player who was interested in the job in January, is a leading contender for the Swansea job.

Unhappy Bony

Wilfred Bony has said in the local press today he wonders why he joined Stoke City. To be fair, based on his performances since joining us on a season long loan form Man City, the majority of Stoke fans are wondering exactly the same! He was superb at Swansea, however he has not really clicked at either Man City or with us. With the signing of Berahino he is not even making the bench at the moment and safe to say we won’t be signing him in the summer.

Better news with Ibrahim Afellay signing an extension to his contract which was due to run out in the summer. Should be a busy summer with a number of players out of contract, including Stephen Ireland and Shay Given, neither of whom look likely to be offered new deals.

Stoke’s 25 man squad as it stands now plus Pugh to Blackpool!

The current 25 man squad as it stands is as follows:

GK: Butland, Haugaard, Given

D: Johnson, Bardsley, Shawcross, Wollscheid, Cameron, Wilson, Muniesa, Pieters, Teixiera

M: Allen, Whelan, Imbula, Adam, Afellay (injured Jan 17), Ireland (injured Feb 17)

S: Walters, Shaqiri, Bojan, Joselu, Crouch, Diouf, Arnautovic

With long-term injuries to Afellay and Ireland unlikely they will be named in the 25 man squad that lasts until January plus Teixiera will surely be moved on/left out. Possible new signings look set tom include a striker – Berahino is first choice target for the club – and possibly defensive cover for Shawcross. New signing Sobhi is under-21 so doesn’t count in the 25 man squad.

Peter Crouch has been linked with a move away again, this time with Swansea according to the Sun.

Rotherham United is now home to two former Stoke players, Danny Collins and Lewis Buxton. Meanwhile ‘The Beast’ aka Jon parkin has signed a one year deal with league Two side Newport County after leaving Forest Green Rovers.

Danny Pugh has a job on his hands after signing for Blackpool, a club beset by off the field problems. Pugh signed a one year deal after leaving Bury. Peter Odemwingie is still on trial with Hull City despite the departure of manager Steve Bruce last week. Hopefully he can get a contract there as be good to see him play in the Premier League still.

Swansea 3-1 Stoke City

Dire performance as we again seem content to sit back and defend which cost us again today. Our once redoubtable defence has now shipped seven goals in the past two Premier League games. Michael Owen bagged his first goal for us – and his 150th Premier League goal – as some consolation for an otherwise forgettable match for us.

Kenwyne Jones started on the bench and came on as a sub for possibly his last appearance in a Stoke shirt? Swansea have had a bid rejected so far.

Stoke have FC Dallas player Brek Shea over for a week’s trial with a view to  a permanent deal. He is only 22 and a left-sided utility player. Rumours are that a fee has already been agreed with the club.

Bye bye Edu

Maurice Edu has left Stoke today to join Bursapor on loan for the rest of the season. US international Edu joined us in the summer as a free transfer from Rangers but has only made one subs appearance.

Swansea have had a £3m bid for Kenwyne Jones turned down as they seem set to lose Danny Graham to Sunderland (a player we have been rumoured to be interested in).

No firm links to incoming players to Stoke although with Edu of the books we have at least one free space in the 25 man squad.

Jermaine Pennant is back at the club after a loan spell at Wolves. Tony Pulis says he will sit down with Pennant to discuss what happens next. Big Mama is also due back off loan at Sheff Wed, although he may go back on loan with them for the rest of the season.

Andy Wilkinson is a doubt for Saturday’s game at Swansea, otherwise no new injury concerns although the weather may have a say!

Stoke City 2-0 Swansea City

Good win and our first win of the season. Two goals from Peter Crouch sealed the three points against an average Swansea side whose tippy tappy football could see them lauded by the pundits but relegated like West Brom a few seasons ago.

Liverpool up next who will have their tails up after thrashing Norwich away…
