Brighton & Pompey promoted; Johnson extends contract

Brighton clinched promotion to the Premier League at the weekend, which will see a nice day trip down to the south coast for us next season. Looks like Newcastle will land the other automatic promotion spot, although both Reading and Huddersfield could catch them if they win all their remaining games and Newcastle slip-up.

Really pleased to see Portsmouth finally achieve promotion to League One. FA Cup winners in 2008 and then relegated from the Premier League in 2010 – not that long ago in the football world. It has taken them four seasons to escape League Two, a timely reminder to current Premier League fans of how a team can really drop like a stone. More recently we have Blackpool, who may clinch a play-off place in League Two, another team beset by off field problems that has seen the club on successive relegation’s since being relegated from the Premier League.

Stoke news and Glen Johnson has signed a one year extension to his current contract taking him up to the summer of 2018. Phil Bardsley and Charlie Adam are both awaiting news on whether their contracts will be renewed as both are out contract this summer.

Unhappy Bony

Wilfred Bony has said in the local press today he wonders why he joined Stoke City. To be fair, based on his performances since joining us on a season long loan form Man City, the majority of Stoke fans are wondering exactly the same! He was superb at Swansea, however he has not really clicked at either Man City or with us. With the signing of Berahino he is not even making the bench at the moment and safe to say we won’t be signing him in the summer.

Better news with Ibrahim Afellay signing an extension to his contract which was due to run out in the summer. Should be a busy summer with a number of players out of contract, including Stephen Ireland and Shay Given, neither of whom look likely to be offered new deals.

Muniesa off?

After an FA Cup performance to forget the transfer rumour mill is in full swing with Real Betis supposedly interested in signing Marc Muniesa, who said last month he wants away to guarantee first team football.

Bojan is after a move and after Saturday’s first half performance he won’t have impressed any potential suitors!

One player on the move is goalkeeper Jakob Haugarrad who has joined Championship side Wigan on loan for the rest of the season. With the signing of Grant permanently and Butland due back from injury hopefully next moth he’s be fourth in pecking order of goalies.

Geoff Cameron is due back from injury next week which should help us out in the midfield area.

Lee Grant set to join on loan

Current Derby County no.2 keeper Lee Grant is set to join Stoke on loan. At 33 he has the experience to provide cover for Shay Given and Jack Butland. Butland is currently injured and is expected back for the Tottenham game, however his injury maybe more serious than expected? Grant has had two spells at Derby, along with time at Burnley and Sheff Wed.

Souttar finds a suitor ;-)

Scotland youth international Harry Souttar is reportedly close to a move to Stoke City from Dundee Utd. Stoke have been after him for sometime and the local press in Dundee are reporting this transfer as being concluded by the end of this week. Another youngster (he’s 18) for the academy ranks along with recent new signing Ryan Sweeney.

Seems Jack Butland could face Man City on Saturday although Glen Johnson is not going to feature as he recovers from injury.

Allen and Sobhi sign for Stoke

Stoke City have made a double signing with Welsh international  Joe Allen joining from Liverpool on a five year deal and Egyptian international Ramadan Sobhi joining after his work permit was approved.

Allen said to the official website “I was really excited as soon as I heard of the Club’s interest and it wasn’t a difficult decision for me to make. I am incredibly excited about my future here at Stoke City.”

Two great signings for the club and with a couple of promising youngsters coming through the ranks a good base for the upcoming new season.

Marko Arnautovic has been linked with Everton, however it appears he may be on the verge of signing a new contract with us. Like N’Zonzi he uses a family member, in this case his brother, which may slow things down a little.

Adam, Moses and Whitehead

Charlie Adam has signed a new extended contract with the club until 2017, with an option of a further year. Great news as his form since becoming a regular in the starting XI following Bojan’s injury was immense. Speaking of Bojan he is aiming to be back in contention for the opening game of the season against Liverpool.

One player who looks like won’t be signing is Victor Moses if this Guardian news piece is to be believed. Seems he is not keen to be any part of a deal to take Begovic to Chelsea. No formal offers have been made for Begovic yet.

Andy Wilkinson is on a week-by-week contract with the club until he finds himself a new club after being released this summer.

Ex-Stoke player Dean Whitehead has moved clubs again signing for Huddersfield Town.
