Farewell Palacios!

Stoke City have announced their retained list and the the first team players leaving are Thomas Sorensen, Wilson Palacios and Andy Wilkinson. Andy Wilkinson has been at the club since 2001, one of our longest serving players of recent times.

Peter Odemwingie is retained by the club although a new contract has yet to be announced. He has been injured for much of the season, although hopefully he will be offered at least a one year contract.

Transfer rumours are linking us with all sorts of players including Barcelona’s Dutch international Ibrahim Afellay and Konoplianka.

Outgoing looks as though Robert Huth will complete a £3m transfer to Leicester City possibly next week. Peter Crouch is being linked with West Brom and former Stoke boss Tony Pulis. That could well happen, although long term Pulis target Carlton Cole has just been released by West Ham.

A bore draw in the end, however our highest even Premier League finish at 9th and points total. Even more impressive when you consider the amount of injuries we have had to key players. Well done Mark Hughes and the coaching team.

Final home game of this season is against Liverpool and forget the Steven Gerrard love in, it looks set to mark the farewell appearance of Andy Wilkinson (out of contract), Thomas Sorenson (retiring) and Wilson Palacios (out of contract & out of sight for most of his time at Stoke). Possibly Odemwingie too, although he may be offered a new contract.

Stoke City 3-1 Wrexham FA Cup 3rd round

At one nil down I did think ‘here we go again…’ losing to lower league teams. Luckily a late goal surge courtesy of Arnie and two from Stephen Ireland saved our blushes. Wrexham deserved a draw really although not complaining! Fourth round draw is on Monday 5th January.

Transfer wise we are set to sign German international and centre-half Philipp Wollscheid on loan until the end of the season. There would then be an option to sign on a permanent deal in the summer if he impresses and he gets a taste for oatcakes 😉 This could mean the end of Robert Huth’s time at Stoke though.

Elsewhere Wilson Palacios could join Brighton on loan and we are again linked to QPR’s Junior Hoilett. We were linked to him in the summer, mainly as Mark Hughes brought him over to the UK.

Man City 0-1 Stoke City

What a result! A storming individual goal by Mama Diouf who ran almost the whole length of the pitch before putting the ball into the net between Joe Hart’s legs. A good all round team performance and in particular Ryan Shawcross was immense at the back.

Begovic Shawcross Wilson Pieters Bardsley; Whelan; Walters (Odemwingie – Adam) N’Zonzi Moses (Muniesa); Diouf Crouch

Sad news in that Peter Odemwingie is out injured with a knee injury, possibly for up to nine months. Get well soon! Transfer deadline day today and looks like we may look to being in a replacement, possibly a loanee.

Two players possibly leaving today could be Wilson Palacios to Aston Villa on a season long loan and Geoff Cameron, who has interested a couple of clubs including Southampton.

Former player Graham Kavanagh has been sacked as manager of Carlisle Utd.

Kitson retires, Palacios fails…

Stoke drew their first pre-season friendly in Germany 1-1 against Borussia Monchen-gladbach with Peter Crouch getting Stoke’s goal. Robert Huth is back in action and the World Cup players (bar Palacios) will join the squad this week having had extra time off.

Bojan could still join from Barcelona although other clubs are interested in signing him too. Two players stayed at home from the German trip to secure moves away from the club. Wilson Palacios nearly moved to Qatar until he failed a medical, so he’s still on our books for now and out of contract in the summer. Cameron Jerome is also looking to move away and maybe Pulis will come in for him if he hasn’t found a new club on deadline day.

Former player news…Jon ‘The Beast’ Parkin has signed for Forest Green, currently managed by one of Pulis’s old coaches Ady Pennock. Meanwhile the Ginger Ninja aka Dave Kitson has announced his retirement from football and leaves his current club Oxford Utd.

Palacios sees red!

First Stoke player to be seen in the World Cup was Wilson Palacios playing for Honduras against France. Stoke fans ran a Twitter sweepstake as to when he’d get booked and he went one better being sent off just before half time! France took the lead from the resulting penalty. That will have done his chances of a transfer the world of good 😦

Honduras were outplayed and France were worthy winners. Next Stoke player in action is goalkeeper Asmir Begovic playing for Bosnia against Argentina. Easy opening game then…

Four teams I will be following in the World Cup…

As there is no Scotland in the World Cup finals (my dad’s to blame as he got me into the World Cup back in 1978 supporting Scotland) I will be following the fortunes of the four nations with Stoke City players in their ranks. First up Honduras who feature Wilson Palacios as their midfield general and you can’t really see them progressing past the group stage. Geoff Cameron will be in his midfield guise for the USA who again I can’t see getting much more than a draw out of their three group matches.

Better prospects with Nigeria though and the reinstated Peter Odemwingie, who was on fine form for us after signing in January. Nigeria have a tough group yet if they stay focussed could progress hopefully. Bosnia I fancy could sneak into the knock out stages and with Asmir Begovic between the sticks its vital for their fortunes he has a good World Cup!
