Saido Berahino claims a spiked drink on a night our led to his recent drugs ban. He certainly didn’t enjoy his past couple of years at West Brom. Hopefully he will get on the score sheet this weekend away at Leicester.

Shaqiri look set to sit out the weekend again after picking up another knock whilst playing for Switzerland in the week. He could be another possible summer departure along with the likes of Bojan, Wolschied and Joselu.

One summer incoming transfer could be a season long loan of Chelsea starlet Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The Sentinel reported this in January and now the ‘Daily Mail’ have picked up on a possible summer move.

Ibrahim Afelley looks set to be out longer than first thought and should be back in training within the next three months, he is back in January at present. Diouf is a possible miss from Saturday’s home game against Spurs and Shaqiri is likely to miss the game as well. However, Glen Johnson could be back in contention for the weekend’s game.

Kosovo were recently cleared to compete internationally by FIFA and play their forst ever World Cup qualifier tonight against Finland. Six players have been allowed to switch national teams, five have previously played for Albania and one for Norway. Others who could switch are Stoke’s Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka (Switzerland), Shefki Kuqi (Finland) and Lorik Cana (Albania). Arsenal’s Xhaka has recently stated he will remain playing for Switzerland.

They were voted in by FIFA in May 2016 along with Gibraltar. They face Finland tonight and have a tough qualifying group – Croatia, Iceland, Turkey and Ukraine – joining Finland.

Gibraltar face Greece at home on Tuesday in their first ever World Cup qualifier.

Britannia no more…Bet 365

Posted in Football, News, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership with tags , , , , , , on April 21, 2016 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Stoke City have announced that the Britannia stadium will now be renamed as the bet365 Stadium from the start of the 2016/17 Premier League season.

It is an initial six-year stadium naming rights agreement with the club’s owners bet365, who have also extended their shirt sponsorship of the Potters for a further three years. But maybe of more interest to fans the club are finally ‘filling in’ the corner between the DPD and Marston’s Pedigree Stands. Hurrah! Mind you what will some fans moan about now on the Oatcake message board?

This will add an extra 1,800 seats and increase the capacity to 30,000. The work will be completed in time for the start of the 2017/18 season.

Stoke City Chief Executive Tony Scholes said: “As supporters are no doubt aware the Britannia brand no longer exists and it was important that we attracted a new stadium naming rights partner.

The Premier League is watched around the world and bet365 are a truly global company. We are delighted that we have been able to reach an agreement with them over the stadium naming rights for an initial six year period, along with the extension of their shirt sponsorship agreement.”

John Coates, Joint Group Chief Executive of bet365 and Vice-Chairman of Stoke City, said: “bet365 have been pleased with the global brand exposure from our sports sponsorship agreement and we are always looking at ways to increase this. Entering into a stadium naming rights agreement with Stoke City seemed a natural fit, especially as the city of Stoke-on-Trent is home to bet365’s corporate headquarters.

We are delighted about the plans to fill in the corner of the stadium and are looking forward to what we hope will be a successful future for both the Club and bet365 with both organisations continuing to work closely together.”

Injury news Shaqiri is out of Saturday’s game against Man City, however Super Johnny Walters looks set to be available.

Stoke City 3-1 Norwich

Posted in Football, football transfers, Stoke City FC, The Premiership with tags , , , , , , on January 14, 2016 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

Good win last night against a 10 man Norwich after Gary O’Neill was sent off for a reckless tackle. An own goal plus goals from Walters and Joselu saw Stoke up to seventh in the table.

Injury wise Shaqiri is out for up to a fortnight and will miss this weekend’s Arsenal game.

Marko Arnautovic is apparently stalling on signing an extension to his existing contract which has 18 months left to run. Better news in that young prospect Ollie Shenton has signed a new contract up to 2020.

No transfer activity yet as we enter the halfway stage of the January transfer window. Peter Crouch is being linked with a move to QPR and Steve Sidwell could be Reading bound. Mark Hughes did hint at some transfer activity this month, however a lot will depend on availability of potential targets and moving on some out fringe players.

Stoke City 2-0 Man City

Posted in Football, Stoke City, Stoke City FC, The Premiership with tags , , , , , on December 7, 2015 by The Rock 'N' Roll Oatcake

What a great result and performance by Stoke City. I was listening on the radio and Man City seemed dazed and confused. Good to see two assists by Xherdan Shaqiri, who is still desperate to get his first goal for us. Marko Arnautovic bagged both goals thanks to Shaqiri’s assists and good to see Afelay settling in more. We didn’t even have Diouf on the pitch and Walters only came on for the last ten minutes.

Stoke haven’t conceded a Premier League goal with Shawcross on the pitch this season.

FA Cup third round draw this evening, a home tie would be good.

Odemwingine signs a new one year contract

Great to see Peter Odemwingie sign a one year contract extension to the summer of 2016. He was injured for much of last season and we missed his pace and shooting skills.

Seems Chelsea will raise their offer for Begovic to £8m who has all but put pen to paper. Possibly Stoke are holding out for a season long loan on a Chelsea player.

The club have had a bid for £12m accepted by Inter Milan for Xherdan Shaqiri, although the player may not want to leave Inter having only joined them six months ago. He nearly signed for us in January.

No news on the Jon Walters contract talks as he has a year left to run on his current deal and could be off.

Few clubs now supposedly bidding for Steven NZonzi with Monaco the latest to be linked to him.

The Konoplianka saga rumbles on but I don’t honestly think he will join us. More likely to sign is Ghanian midfielder Emmanuel Aguemang Badu, who would offer competition for Glen Whelan in the team.
